More About This Tutor...

I began tutoring people when I was in the eigth grade. I decided I wanted to help out at the school across the street from my middle school in Colorado. I enrolled in a class that allowed us to go and assist the teachers and help the students. I fell in love with kids then for sure. I already knew I liked them because I started babysitting when I was 11 and couldn't stop! Then in ninth grade, a neighbor failed kindergarten and asked if I would starting coming over several days a week to help him understand what was being taught. Needless to say, he made it to the first grade! I now have a 17 year old sister who is constantly asking for my assistance in her homework and it is with great pleasure that I assist her.
I have a background in Psychology, so I am extremely intuitive with what a person needs regarding their learning style. I am able to adapt my teaching style to their needs ... read more

University of the South, B.A., Major in English Literature, Minor in American History, Minor in Physics University of Mississippi, J.D. (Juris Doctor) Admitted to State Bar of Mississippi and of Texas. Practiced law in Houston, Texas until partial retirement in 2014. Have taught adult classes in variety of subjects from 1980 to the present--ranging from legal, to science, to liberal arts such as history and literature.
When I teach I want to engage the student or students. I want to grab their interest and keep it. This requires two main things of the teacher: he must know the subject well and he must have enthusiasm for the subject. This a ... read more

Experienced Instructor: Elementary- University

I prefer to teach with open dialogue. Feedback and discussion is one of the most solid methods for evaluating comprehension. If I see that subject comprehension is lacking or missing, it is my challenge to re-present the material for the student (as many times as it takes!).
I teach at a University full time. My experience ranges from traditional students, to special education students, and many non-traditional students (such as those adult students working full time and raising families). I enjoy making science accessible to everyone because the subject is truly fun!

An understanding tutor

The teaching style that I have always promoted is to recognize that everyone learns on a different level and at a different pace. Therefore, a step by step instructor is needed and that instructor has to know how to meet that individual needs based on what they know not what I know. You find alot of college professors teach lessons based on what they know and their experience not realizing that the some students learn at different paces. I experienced this as both an undergraduate and graduate student but I had to go through it or drop the class.
I have worked with all grade levrls as substitute school teacher with range from pre k to 12th grade and worked for a tutoring company while turoring an elementary student in math. I have a masters degree and while obtaining my degrees, I am very familiar with test preparation. I have taken basic computer classes in the past and I am m ... read more

I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal opportunity to learn. It is not just about grades and assignments, that is just the means to an end, but it is about learning. In order for the students to learn, the teacher needs to be passionate about the students as well as the subject that is being taught. That will instill in the students a desire to learn and understand.
In having a science background, I have not only learned laboratory skills and reasoning skills, but I have learned how to increase efficiency, communicate in a clear manner, and write in a way that is direct and clear. I enjoy learning, and I instill that passion into my students as best I ... read more

After many years as a student, I recognize what a difference a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and caring teacher can make in a child's educational experience. I strive to fulfill this role, emphasizing interactive and hands-on learning at deeper levels of processing. I have worked with students struggling with motivation, learning disabilities, psychological, and physical issues; I firmly believe that all children can learn, and learn best if their needs, barriers, and learning type (e.g., auditory) are considered individually. I am patient, flexible, non-judgmental, creative, and caring. I am passionate about working with and for others.
I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Psychology and a minor in French. During my college experience, I worked with students of various ages, from elementary school through college, in different capacities, including tutor, mentor, ... read more

My teaching style is to engage young people into the developmental process, through empowerment. By allowing young to have a say in their own development, I find it makes them more willing to be open for learning. As, a product of the inner city, I was always interested in helping young people who came through the same path as I. I have always valued a good education so I earned dual bachelor degrees in English and Psychology from H.B.U. while working and raising two girls. After graduation I worked in college admissions for several years before deciding that I wanted to educate students instead of recruiting them. During the last year, I worked with elementary, middle, and high school students in the areas of tutoring and substitute teaching, which helped me gain a deeper understanding of what motivates students to learn. I have experience teaching and tutoring English, Reading, Mathematics, Psychology, and Science.
I love working with and teaching children of all ages. I am an active educator engaged in tapping into a student's unique learning style so I can provide the best education possible.
