A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent graduate and former tutor I still have a strong drive for learning and helping others to learn. I had two areas of study while attending college, they were Business and accounting. During this time I took several math, business, and writting classes giving me a good balance in all skill areas. I became A tutor for my last year of school to not only help others, but to sharpen my own skills and stay up to date.
I belive the key to teaching is Patience! Not everyone learns the same way so you cant always teach the same way. The best way to teach is to find the way that the individaul learns whether its through reading, seeing, or listening to the material. I like to try to provide many examples that they can relate to so that it will stick with them.

I'm a strong believer in the Gardner's ideas of many different learning styles and types of intelligent. Some students are better audio, tactile, or visual learners. I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to find the best learning style for each student and build on that format through scaffolding. I love nothing better than to see the light bulb go off in a students mind. This also helps them to realize that learning can be a fun adventure.
I've been a special education teacher and held positions in resource and in self-contained rooms. I've taught students with learning problems in reading, math, and writing. I have also worked in the Lights on for Learning program and have been a home tutor for home bound students in the district.

I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process.
I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. I firmly believe that children are able to learn and grasp concepts more easily by relating the lessons and information to their everyday lives. If the material is presented in a manner where students can recall past experiences in their lives, it is much more likely to gain their attention and interest. My teaching philosophy is to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for my students, in which they feel equal and confident as learners. Creating a positive learning environment begins with building a strong rapport with students and coworkers. Another aspect of building a strong classroom community is motivation. As a teacher, my goal is to help student build strong self-efficacy so that they feel inclined to work hard and develop an inner sense of motivation.
