I love teaching all ages and skill levels. I adjust my teaching style to the individual - some people are visual learners or oral learners or hands-on learners. I teach by example and try to encourage my students to understand "why" rather than just "how."
I began college as an engineering major, so I have background in advanced mathematics and physics. I went on to change my major to psychology where I gained knowlege of social and behavioral sciences, as well as research technologies and statistical analysis. Since graduating college with a B.A. in psychology, I have worked as a psychology researcher, accounting assistant, and in 3 different roles for an international pharmaceutical company. Through my job experience, I have gained knowledge in different business disciplines and areas such as Lean/Six Sigma and Supply Chain/Logistics planning.

I have two years of tutoring experience in college chemistry with the University Learning Center at Penn State. I tutored over twenty students in college chemistry. I am currently tutoring and mentoring a student in High School algerbra and chemistry for free.
I believe in problem-based tutoring for algebra, and construct problems based on the textbook problems whenever possible. I let the student try the problem first, watching closely for any mistakes, and then teach the rules as necessary, and summarize mistakes after each set of problems. However, I can also teach all the rules beforehand if a student has been absent from class. For chemistry, I reviewed class notes with students and then explained the fundamentals whenever there was a question, and then did practice problems with the students.

When I tutor, I first strive to make the session interesting and fun. Before beginning, I would strive to identify which types of learning the student excels in and focus on them. I also make sure to change the learning styles and activities often to avoid students from becoming tired of an exercise.
I have taught at the university level for 4 years and tutored all ages of children and adults for 3 years. The subjects that I have tutored or taught include English, mathematics, and the social sciences (economics, government and history). I have a real passion for working with youth and their families and believe that it is a calling that can change lives. I enjoy working in collaboration with students. As a teacher, I see the student/teacher relationship as a partnership bound by communication and compassion. A teacher must listen to his/her students and try to understand the world from the student's point of view. From this foundation, a teacher is then able to present or teach material in the way a student is apt to understand it. Students learn best by doing, and I am committed to providing hands on learning experiences for my students. I know that all students can learn and I am dedicated to making that happen.
I have worked with youth all my life. I managed youth services at a library and was responsible for all programming and special events for youth of all ages as well as programs for struggling, beginning ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that learning is the goal of life. While there are successes and failures there is always learning. Teaching is a priveldged position which requires integrity, honesty, humility. Teachers are duty bound to their students. Teaching is more that just imparting subject matter knowledge, it is about advancing a students critical thinking and ideally advancing their sense and belief in themsleves. All students can learn and it is up to the teacher to find the right method and style to make the greatest impact. I have been blessed with several great teachers in my life. I am now at a point where I want to become one of them for the next generation.

As a 2010 graduate of IUPUI, my student teaching experience has allowed me to work with a diverse group of individuals. For my first student teaching experience, I was immersed in an English as a second language setting. At my second student teaching experience, I was involved in an inquiry based, hands-on leaning curriculum that differentiated instruction to meet the needs of every child. I have had the opportunity to work with students with different learning styles and multiple ability levels. This has allowed tremendous grouth in my ability to adapt to new situations and provide instruction that is unique and meaningful.
I believe that all students are worth my time, my ears, my voice, and my compassion. I believe that all students cc an learn, all students want to learn, all students can have fun with learning, and all students have something to teach me. I believe that ... read more
