A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate of both the University of Colorado and Adams State College. I hold a Master's degree in Secondary Education as well as a Initial Teacher's license. I have experience as a volunteer tutor in social studies and math, a paid tutor in reading, a student teacher, and as a substitute for the last year and a half. I also have experience as a mentor to young people through the YMCA.
My teaching style revolves around the specific learning needs of students because each person not only learns differently but has specific strengths and weakness. As teachers it is our job to meet the needs of all learners. I do not believe in presently material in one way, or one way all the time.

I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.

I earned a Bachelor's degree in Public Health Nutrition, which required me to take many science classes, including anatomy/physiology and chemistry. I have had a career as an ESL teacher overseas and in the U.S. For the past ten years, I have gained extensive experience teaching primary and secondary students as well as college students and other adults in classroom and tutorial settings. My classes have included reading, writing, grammar, speaking, listening, and literature analysis.
Teaching comes naturally to me and I have the patience, dedication, warmth and concern that this profession requires. When a student recognizes that you sincerely care about their progress, they are more apt to apply themselves and feel confident in their ability to achieve. I believe in encouraging critical thinking skills, learning by doing, and learning through discovery. Education should be ap ... read more

I've recently tutored math and general science for UpwardBound, a program designed to inspire and give the tools necessary to under-privileged high school students to become first generation college students. Throughout my study of math and physics, I've found that most people that are unable to do these subjects are limited by their own phobias and that if they are simply explained in the right way anyone can feel comfortable with frightening subjects such as math and physics.
In teaching math and physics I find that most student's heads start to spin when looking at numbers, so I do my best to use analogies to describe a mathematical process, then once a student feels comfortable with the analogy they can apply this analogy to solve problems with numbers. Again stemming from overcoming phobias of math or physics being the most important step in learning, I try to make the complic ... read more

As both a teacher and a tutor, I have found several things to be important to a successful educator. First is engagement. I find it necessary to engage the student and involve them in the lesson. I've found that even something as simple as using props to illustrate a point helps the student understand the material better, but also be more interested in learning. Secondly, I've found that flexibility is also important. I understand that all students learn differently, and it is imperative that the teacher learns to adapt to each student's style, strengths, and weaknesses.
I have an extensive math and science-backed education, including two BS degrees and an MS as well. Not only have I excelled my entire academic career, but I am a great communicator and teacher. Teaching has been an extremely rewarding career. My primary goal as a teacher is to help each child to experience the great feeling of success. I believe that success, big or small, promotes self confidence, which creates further successes. My teaching style is supportive and kind. I challenge my students to the extent that I believe they are capable. I am patient and believe in positive reinforcement as a teaching tool.
I have been teaching dance to children and young adults for the last 10 years. However I pride myself on teaching my students more than the physical elements of dancing. The exercises, and "games" that I teach incorporate important memory and creative thinking skills. A Little Bit About Me...

One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept. My goal as a teacher is to make sure that my students have received a full understanding of and confidence in the material.

I love the interaction between a teacher and their students. For me teaching is a form of self discovery. My students are like mirrors in which I see my strengths and weaknesses. As a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I've witnessed students struggling to understand concepts and began tutoring in order to help them. In addition to the courses I've taken for my environmental studies and political science majors, I've also taken courses in economics and engineering. I've tutored high school students and college students, and while I'm not certain what my SAT score was, I know my ACT score was a 31. In addition to tutoring, I've also had extensive leadership experience. I have been through the Core Leadership Program, the Advanced Leadership Program (both of which were offered through CUGOLD at the CU), and was a Coordinator for the Core Leadership Program.
I really enjoy teaching. There's two things in particular I find especially amazing: The first is working with a student and hear them say, "Oh, that's what it's all about! I get it now." S ... read more

I am an exceptional math/English tutor. I've earned a bachelor degree in Accounting from Santa Clara University. I have three years professional working experience for several multinational companies, which has helped me understand the importance of great communication and math skills in business. In Denver, I've taught math and English to high-risk youth. For the 2010-2011 school year, I had 100% of my students’ parents request me to be next year's tutor. I passed the state certified PLACE mathematics exam showing competency in math (i.e. pre-algebra, algebra I, II, calculus, trig, geometry, and other math operations and concepts). In Peru, I taught English for a year. I speak fluent Spanish and have taught many students with disabilities.

I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.
My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
