I am a life-long learner with degrees in Zoology & Philosophy, and I was the Valedictorian of my high school. I have 17 years of experience in the IT industry, mostly as a Technical Writer. I have taught in public school (Science for 6th-12th grades), I have tutored in the subjects of reading, writing, math, and science, and I have taught as a substitute in various subjects. A Little Bit About Me...

I have always worked with children, from baby sitting to working in a licensed day care facility. I have helped children with their homework and love the challenges early childhood creates. With my experience working with children I have learned patience and valuable listening skills. I earned by Bachelors degree in history which taught me how to sit and pay attention to detail.
Teaching to me is one of the greatest pleasures I have. Helping children learn and making learning fun is something I strive for. I understand that all children are different and teaching styles need to be just as different. I like to find different ways for children to like and understand a problem that was once difficult. I listen and like the children to explain to me their difficulties and come up with a solution together to make learning fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a substitute teacher, I try to engage the interest of all the students by greeting them by name initially as I welcome them to their classroom. Easing the tension when someone messes up by asmitting that everyone blows it at some point is always a hit. It is understood by all that the day will be different than when their teacher is in the classroom, but that we'll get through together. So, we move through the day making the most of every activity.
As a Michigan resident, I was unable to find sny substantial work in the fiels of Social Work once I earned my BA degree. So, I worked in 3-4 school districts over a two year period before gaining full time work with the State. Eventually, in 2006 I lost my position with the state and again returned to substitute teaching. I enjoy young poeple and giving them a strong dose of encouragement even in brief one-day encounters. I think learning should be fun. If a student doesn't enjoy what she is doing, she won't likely attain mastery of the discipline. Moreover, I think students learn best by doing as opposed to being told what to do (i.e. practice as opposed to lecture and explanation). This means that I leave a lot of space for students to try things without fear of making mistakes. Evaluation (especially critical evaluation) is an important element in the later learning process, but initially the priorities should be placed upon fun, experimentation, praise, and lots and lots of practice.
As a graduate student, I worked as a tutor in the campus Writing Center. Later, just before graduating, I taught Writing, ESL and GED at the Denver County Jail. Since completing my degree, I became a Writing and Critical Thinking Professor for two separate Universities (Metro State College and Devry University), whe ... read more

I am patient, kind, respectful, and good-humored. I have noted that my own excitement in learning is contagious. I believe each of us excels in individual areas of particular interest. I support self-esteem, self-respect, and respect for others, and I think these qualities and values are self-motivating. I learn, as well, from those whom I teach.
Most of my career experience has been in News-Editorial and creative writing. As my daughter and son (now young adults) have grown and matured, I have been involved at several levels and in various paid and volunteer capacities as teacher, assistant/aide, and tutor. My substitute teaching experience primarily has been in the subjects of English, social studies, music, math, and art.

Here is Some Good Information About Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? The best way to teach writing is to engage students in the writing process. This recursive process includes planning, writing, revising, and editing. As students become more proficient, the amount of time spent on each step in the process may shorten, and the necessity for teacher involvement should lessen. Florida Writes coming up again?
