A Little Bit About Me...

During my past three years at St. John Fisher College I have been actively engaged in the chemistry department. I have been exposed to various teaching types, one being active learning within a group. This has allowed me to develop teaching skills by explaining my ideas on the subject to my group, while learning the material at the same time. Also, for the past two years I have been an individual tutor for students taking introduction to chemistry. During the tutoring sessions I would help with homework or further explain the material covered in class.
I believe that different teaching styles help different students. A method of both lecture and active learning can be effective for the widest range of students. A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with my masters in math education in 2008 from SUNY Fredonia. During the school year, I am a substitute teacher. I have taught long-term at various districts in 7th/8th grades, as well as Algebra. Currently I am teaching summer school through a BOCES program, which includes Algebra and Trigonometry. During the school year I have tutored a Geometry student as well.
All students learn in a different way. Primarily, I will try to tutor to that students strengths, but I will include other ways as well. This is to allow the student various opportunities to better expand a topic they struggle with and gain more knowledge on that topic. My goal is to give students the confidence to succeed in the math classroom.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching and working with children not only educates them but it educates myself in the process. I get to touch up on materials that the children are learning, as well as learn better ways to educate students. Patience is what I believe is the most important aspect of teaching. Children can become unfocused very easily. When children are distracted it may be very difficult to get them focused. Taking your time and making sure they refocus, can actually save time. If they are unfocused and miss a part of what is instructed, they will be confused throughout the whole process. It helps to be patient with the educating process. These educators who take the time to make sure everything is understood make a huge difference in each student.

As an infectious disease researcher, I have applied skills obtained since high school. My chemistry and biology skills were necessary to make bases, induce parasite inoculations, and process my data by ELISAs, DNA Extractions, Chromatography, Crystallography, and PCRs. My grammatical skills were essential for laboratory proposals, reports, and presentations. During my tenure at Buffalo State College, I volunteered at the Equal Opportunity Program, where my main strength was utilized by actively tutoring students in the art of the english essay. I was able to tutor these students and advise them in the general format of the essay. We began by procurring a general introduction, or a statement of fact,followed by the body of the essay, descriptive references, and tying it all together with a summary that proves the point that you have set out to make.
