I was the Director of the Math and Science Lab at Volunteer State Community College for over twenty years. I taught and tutored the students in all of the college's math and science classes. I have worked with mathematics subjects from Basic Math to Differential Equations, including Statistics. It is very important to assess what the student already knows and the level of understanding they hold at the beginning. It is also important to make sure that what they know is correct and that they are not confused or misunderstanding the material. After which, getting to know the individual style of learning for each student will insure that time is used efficiently and that the student is understanding and retaining the material being taught. Working one-on-one is the best teaching method; however, when that is not possible, working in small groups is also very effective.

A Little Bit About Me...

Not every student learns in the same way, and understanding this simple concept is crucial to successful teaching and tutoring. My goal is to understand where each student is in their larger journey as a writer, as well as where he or she is in terms of the immediate work. I believe strongly in flexibility and patience as a teacher, in remaining open to what students say and to implementing new approaches when necessary. I listen carefully to what a student is struggling with and to his or her history as a writer, before I form a practical plan for improvement. The goal is not only to get through one or two papers, but to identify recurring problems and to understand why this particular student is struggling with these specific areas.
