I like to teach by example and give the student the opportunity to learn by doing. I do not do the work for the student, but instead allow him or her to do the work with my support until he or she is capable of doing the work independently. I am patient and thorough with my work. I do not get angry and I do not act strict with students. The 2009-2010 school year will be my third year as a substitute teacher. I have worked with all levels of students, from special needs elementary to AP high school courses, and in both urban and suburban districts. I had some training as an educator in college but have lots of real world experience as well. I have a deep understanding of research strategies and love all of the social sciences. I believe that students learn best when they are involved in the process. Therefore I like to put students in charge of their learning-whether it is presenting information gathered for a presentation or helping to develop the topics that will be discussed in a particular unit; as long as they are involved and not passive in the process students will learn. As a foster parent, I tutored our first child as he progressed through kindergarten and the first grade. His previous school experience was lacking at best, and he had little confidence in his scholastic ability. I was able to pinpoint his natural aptitude--mathematics--and use it to help not only boost his self-esteem regarding academics, but also to tailor my approach to his other subjects as well. Since math is very much tied to logic, using logical constructs to aid him in his critical thinking proved fruitful in showing him how to solve problems regarding tasks such as alphabetization, grammar, and spelling, among others.
