Meeting students where they are academically ~ 15 yrs. exp.

I believe that grammar and punctuation are critical in written expression. I am very focused on the learning style of the student and will begin with most student making that determination and connection with the student. I also work well with students who are dyslexic, have ADD/ADHD, and who are left-handed. I attempt to build a relationship with the student so that are willing to listen, learn, and work to master their assignment and/or skill. Meeting students where they are academically and not "where they are supposed to be." Allow the student to lead the way and discover the answers and pathways to knowledge and skill.
I have taught middle school language arts for 15 years in both public and private schools. I excel in teaching young people how to write clearly, completely, and concisely. While I can teach them grammar, punctuation, spelling, organization, and research sk ... read more

I am a former teacher of English, acting, SAT Prep, and Public Speaking. All this experience gives me unique perspective. I am adventurous and like to help students enjoy learning. I have taught 7th grade - adults in subjects ranging from acting, English/language arts, and Japanese adults how to speak and write better English.
My teaching style is hands-on. Students learn best by doing, so after a mini-lesson, I encourage them to try it out for themselves.

My comments on tutoring Literature : My university education heavily emphasized reading and analyzing literature. As a part of my classwork I read European and American literature from Beowulf to Brontë to Joyce to Woolf; Postcolonial literature, including Salman Rushdie and Arundhati Roy; and a wide variety of literary criticism. I have given college lectures on a number of novels and poems, namely Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Brontë's Jane Eyre, and T.S. Eliot's Wasteland. In my tutoring, I analyze books such as To Kill a Mockingbird and 1984 with my students.

I earned my BA in English in 2010 and have been teaching and tutoring high school and college students ever since, both in the classroom and as a private tutor. My years of experience have helped me understand not only what is expected of students but how to best teach those skills. My expertise includes grammar, AP classes, creative and academic writing, in-depth text analysis, and vocabulary development. My favorite thing to teach is grammar because once my students learn how sentences function, they can finally have fun writing and editing their own work! Ask for a free consultation to find out how you or your student can benefit from my tutoring services. I would love to discuss long term goals and how I can help you get ahead in your current studies!

For most students, essays are their number one issue. After they have told me their concerns, I like to read over the paper myself and any correct grammar mistakes I find along the way. I also sometimes write in comments in the margin to refer back to. If I have an issue or am confused about a certain session, I stop and ask the student. I also often read the sentence(s) aloud so the student can hear the what is wrong. If he or she still does not see an issue, I explain my concerns and we work together until we are both happy. After I’m done reading, I express any more concerns I have and once again work with the student until we are both happy. I also help with work cited pages. Most of my experience is with MLA style, but I have also worked with APA and Chicago. I also reference any websites that I think may be helpful. Overall, I believe that listening to the student is the most im ... read more

As a journalist, I value communication skills. I have 4 years of professional experience in the fields of marketing, public relations and communications. I love sharing my love of the English language with others. Last school year I tutored a kindergartener in reading and vocabulary.
I enjoy working with children because they are more open to learning. To me, there is nothing more fulfilling than when a child grasps concepts he or he previously struggled with. I believe everyone has the ability to learn. It's a matter of adapting to the child's strengths, weaknesses and learning styles. I am very flexible and like to "think outside of the box."

A Little Bit About Me...

My undergraduate degree is in French however I took extensive coursework in mathematics and chemistry and have a good understanding of all the sciences. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored other students in science courses and lead a laboratory course. These were rewarding experiences as I watched my peers learn and thrive in academics. While working toward my Masters in Environmental Science I was able to teach the laboratory portion of an introductory course for two years. This allowed me to develop lesson plans, tests and quizzes and lab activities. I was also able to tutor two very different high school students in French, algebra and geometry, tutoring one-on-one and learning the challenges and rewards of diverse students.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is a delicate balance of content knowledge, compassion, and flexibility. Obviously, an effective teacher should have a great understand of his or her content area, but knowing how to teach and share that knowledge is the key to an outstanding teacher. I do not see students are not robots that all process information the same, so having the compassion to see each student as an individual with different ways of processing information drives my teaching. I take the time to know and care about my students in order to be able to adjust material to meet the needs of the students as well as the standards. The last component I incorporate is flexibility. I see flexibility as a key to understanding how each student learns.
As an adult I realized that my true calling was teaching, and I advanced my education to become an educator. I am a third generation teacher and have a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all children are unique and gifted in some way. I truly prefer to work with them one-on-one. Each child learns in a manner that is a challege to meet and I welcome this challenge and often find that I learn as much from them as they might from me. Children love to learn and I love to provide that opportunity in as many varied and intersting ways as I can.

A Little Bit About Me...

During college, I changed my major several times, taking numerous classes for each one to determine what I wanted to do with my life. I experimented with Political Science for two years, in which I took classes in criminology, speech, and history. My next year of college was spent in English and Writing, where I focused on the obvious, as well as classes in psychology. The last few years of my college experience, where I ended up graduating with a Bachelor’s in Finance, were based around all of the science and math classes that Ohio Dominican University had to offer. I have also worked in multiple management positions where I was responsible for interviewing and training countless employees.

Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not. While giving instruction, I strive to be patient, accomodating and respectful of the student in need. I love to give encouragement and praise for any task or assignment done well!
