My comments on tutoring Science : My major is in Cognitive Psychology with a double minor in Biology and Applied Anthropology. I have taken a broad range of courses and feel competent in my abilities to tutor most elementary and middle grades fields of science.

As a returning adult college student, I have both classroom experience and life experience. My academic background in developmental and cognitive psychology as well as linguistics has helped me lead and tutor peers in small group sessions for hard to grasp topics and in pre-exam sessions for consolidation of the semesters material. I am currently employed as a UNCC tutor in biology and psychology. I have also been asked to return in the fall as a statistics supplemental instructor for statistics.
My approach is multimodal as all students are different. The one consistent element is that of an active learning environment. Passive memorization and repetitive tasks are not part of my repertoire as both have usually been unsuccessfully attempted by those seeking tutoring. I request a lot of participation from the student. Development of critical thinking is also a fundamental par ... read more

Time Tested Teacher

I began my 32 year teaching career in the field of music. I taught in the Visalia Unified School District in Visalia, California. I taught classroom music to children in grades 4-6. This was a job that required traveling from school to school encompassing 12 schools a week. During that time, I worked on completing a fifth year of college in order to obtain an elementary teaching credential from California State University, Fresno. Upon completion on my student teaching in a second grade classroom, I began a teaching position in Lindsay, California teaching 2nd grade for 4 years there. My next four years were spent substituting in the Rock Hill, SC school district after relocating from California due to my late husband's job transfer. I completed several long term as well as short term assignments. After that I secured a position teaching middle school math at Chester Middle Schoo ... read more

Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get frustrated and overwhelmed. It is easier to learn more from current knowledge than try to teach a whole new way. After all, most students study habits are based on how their teacher has taught them, and I wouldn't go against what the teacher has taught. The point of tutoring is to help a child understand the work they are currently doing in school. It is my job to make sure that happens. I will want to speak with your child to determine the best way to teach them.

Hands on- creative-student centered learning!

I think that a lot of learning happens by students being actively engaged in what they are learning. I try to get/make hands on activities for students to learn.
I am a certified teacher. I have taught first grade and I am currently teaching second grade. I have 2 years experience as a tutor for students in elementary school and also high school. I work hard to help students do the best they can. I look for ideas outside the box to help students learn. Along with hands on activities, I also incorporate catchy ways to remember certain objectives. I make learning fun by creating a great relationship with the student which allows them to learn and want to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with honors from the College of Charleston (and the Honors College) with a degree in Business Administration/Finance and a minor in Pre-Actuarial studies. As part of my minor I completed Calculus I, II, III, and IV, Linear Algebra, and graduate courses in Probability and Statistics. Throughout college and high school I have had the opportunity to offer tutoring services to friends and class mates, which has allowed me to develop and improve my teaching skills.
