I work well as a one on one special education aide because my attention is soley on the activities and education of my students. I am a laid back worker, and extremely patient because I find that if I allow myself to get out of shape, then I am not an effective teacher and aide, and my students will see this. I was a corporate trainer for 3 years, followed by 12 years serving as a software instructor. Prior to and throughout this time, I also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible school, teaching everyone from 2 year olds to adults. I spent one summer as a reading tutor, and many of my software classes have been 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. I have volunteered as an SOL coach and in Head Start classrooms.
When I teach reading, I convey my love of reading. When I teach math, I convey the logical beauty of math. When I teach other subjects, I stress the importance of the material and how it is relevant to everyday life. My experience includes two years of full time teaching at the PreK level. I also have experience working with grade level students through practicums, student teaching, and substitute teaching. A Little Bit About Me...

My father was my first math mentor. He graduated from West Point - and tutored his roommate John Saxon. John developed the Saxon method. The next influencer was Investigations - the math program used at West School in New Canaan, CT where I did my student teaching. That program taught me to do "break apart" math - which teaches math independence. I have done more substitute teaching at all grade levels - and often play "Mental Math" with white boards -which the kids love. They work in teams and get the adrenaline rush of beating the clock and the teacher. This methodology - has worked really well for AD&D kids.
Teach it. Repeat it. Practice It. Discuss it. What went right? WHat went wrong? What did they learn. Egg Cartons and White boards are my favorite manipulatives. Often mistakes are the best teachers.
