I began my college career in the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota. During my five semesters in the program I was able to study calculus and physics. I am familiar with high school level physics and mathematics up to and including pre-calculus. After five semesters at the University I transferred to St. Cloud State University to study economics. I believe that each child has their own special style of learning in which they succeed the best at. When I tutor students I take the time to get to know each student on an individual basis and as a unique person. I make it a priority to determine their learning style and use that to implement a plan. I try and understand the reason they are having problems in their studies and then execute a plan in which they can succeed. I create study guides, review questions, and sample test questions for the students as well. In addition, a tutor can be a positive role model in student's lives and serve as a mentor and can be a person who the students can count on to answer questions. I worked with the Minnesota Literacy Council tutoring adult learners in basic math and reading skills. I attempted multiple approaches with each person until we found one that allowed the learner to make sense of the symbols and language. I encouraged the ability to work at the material until the learner could make it his/her own in some way. I also trained new employees each month in the use of a software program at a pharmaceutical company. Employees were required to learn the program regardless of experience and ability with computer programs. I was challenged to engage disinterested employees, encourage frustrated employees, and meet the demands of highly inquisitive employees while maintaining focus on the required information.
