My comments on tutoring Journalism : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. My experience in diagnosing and instructing students at various stages and abilities of literacy acquisition has helped me garner a talent for overcoming this challenge, and propelling students into higher order thinking.
As an educator, I view myself not as a provider of knowledge, but rather as a facilitator. A Little Bit About Me...

I will fit my teaching to the client. If a student learns with visuals, I will use visuals. If a student is an aural learner, I will cater to that side. I am very flexible and take direction very well. I have taken a year or more of each language I am qualified to tutor. The languages are Italian, French, German, Spanish and Latin. I also lived in Italy for a couple of months, in the Northern region. So I have real world experience speaking the language.
I have recently graduated from Purchase College with an Undergraduate degree in Music with a minor in English. I was then offered an amazing opportunity to bring a non-profit pre-school and daycare back to fruition which I accomplished in under a year. I am patient and encouraging. I have a talent for identifying how people learn. It is important to know what works with people in order to dail into the proper approach. Some people can read and immediately understand. Others need the repetition of hands-on experience. Some need memory tricks like "Mickey Mouse" for spelling "accoMModate" or "seize the weird sheik at your Leisure" for remembering exceptions to the "i-before-e" rule.
