I started teaching English-Language Arts & U.S. History in central California, where I taught 8th graders for two years. Then I moved to South Korea, where I taught ESL for one year. After that amazing experience, I moved to South Lake Tahoe and taught English to 7th & 8th graders. While teaching, I also tutored after-school programs for kids that ranged from 2nd grade to high school. I have tutored in the subjects of reading, writing, life science, elem. and middle school math, and Spanish. Currently, I am tutoring two sets of kids in elementary subjects, with an emphasis on reading comprehension, writing essays, building vocabulary, and working on math skills. I believe students will rise to the level of expectations set for them. I am a bit of a comedian, and I use humor to allay frustration in learning situations. I believe in setting goals and charting a specific path for reaching them, while being flexible enough to alter the path along the way. Praise and positive reinforcement are powerful tools when teaching challenging material, and I use them frequently.
I received a BA in General Business from WSU, and was honored as a Cum Laude graduate. The courses were varied and included a wide array of math application, from supply and demand curves to interest rate calculations. My classmates gave me the nickname "Webster" because I was frequently asked to edit their papers and to tutor them in several different subjects. I love working with teenagers, and watching their faces change when they really GET a concept for the first time!
