A Little Bit About Me...

Through my years as a tutor, I have come to believe in the ability of each student to improve his or her writing skills. I have worked with students at many levels of comprehension and aptitude, including ESL students, and I have witnessed the confidence that grows through contact with a kind and effective tutor. I have become skilled in figuring out each student's needs--are they nervous about revision? Intimidated by grammar? Stuck in the brainstorming process? I have the tools to tackle any writing problem, and can think on my feet for that one solution that will make the difference. There's nothing better than seeing a change come over a student's face when a breakthrough has occurred or an idea has come to life between the two of us.

In a world of specialization, I tend to break the mold by having rather wide academic interests. I earned a bachelors degree in Religion, then went on to earn an MA in Theology. In between this period I did a semester of Analytic Philosophy while attending Talbot School of Theology in La Mirada CA. The nature of my studies has forced me to focus on worldview. In doing so I acquired confidence in engaging the natural sciences, namely biology, world history, and philosophy. Along the way I have also become a skilled writer. During my time at Liberty I spent a semester as a teacher assistant, which included teaching class occasionally. I have also had tutored many people in understanding the Bible, both in college and church settings.
I love teaching, period. I strive for clarity in my presentation. This has allowed me to explain very complex ideas to adults as well as very y ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I took high school and college seriously. After college I worked for several years before attending law school. After law school I decided to combine my legal experience with hands-on medical skills, and I enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at SUNY Delhi, which I will complete next May. This summer is a lull before completing my education and embarking on a medical administration career.
I believe effective learning can occur in a 1-on-1 tutoring situation when the tutor and the student can communicate well. Tone, mood, and setting all come into play. A tutor who is relaxed, cheerful, encouraging, and resolutely intelligent is more likely to be approachable and someone the student will collaborate with successfully. I believe in active listening and working together to establish a method of studying.

My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abstract Algebra, Differential equations, and topology. I was especially interested in algebraically-capable computer math programs. I,eventually, went back to school for my Mathematics degree as part of a long-standing interest in and commitment to Mathematics. I presently teach students who are "at risk" in the 7th through 12th grades and have done so for the last 10-11 years at OHM-BOCES. I have tutored the NYS Math B course for 5 years as well as the current NYS Algebra I/II courses.

I enjoy working with children and feel that they each have their own individual learning style. At times, I feel that conventional educational methods may fail some children. Educators must learn to be flexible, and allow students to learn in the style that they feel most comfortable. As a tutor, I feel that establishing a good rapport/friendship with my students before trying to "teach" them anything has been the most successful. If a child feels that you understand them and are interested and invested in their lives, you can become much more skillful at helping them to learn.
As a tutor, I owe the students in my cohort the very best! My method of educating and teaching style derives from a simple philosophy that experience has the most profound effect on learning. Therefore I always begin my approach by identifying ways in with I can match demonstration to the particular personality of the individual I am teaching. I infuse experiential examples into the textbook explanations to create a more tangible presentation of the information. My objective is to get the student to connect with familiar ideas, emotions, and experiences. I have the ability to simplify and customize the information compatible with the learning styles of the individual.

My love for teaching and working with children has allowed me to learn a variety of ways to help my students learn. Through the use of audio, visual and tactile manipulatives, my students have had some very exciting experiences and have succeeded in meeting the objectives set for them. I do believe in setting high expectations for each child and my experience has shown me that they rise to the occasion. I try to highlight a students strengths and build solid study habits and work patterns. For instance, if a student has trouble focusing on his/her work, I try to push them for short periods of intense study, and then reward them with a break. Since my first degree was completed through an integrated, online program, I stress organizational skills. If I feel that a student is having an issue with organization, I explain to them how much it helps me to organize and then we address the issues they might be having.
Currently pursuing my second Bachelor's degree, I have been exposed to a wide variety of curriculum. I excel in teaching the required level of High School and College level mathematics and also have an aptitude for academic, technical, and narrative writing. I believe that there is no such thing as one size fits all teaching. Every student learns in a different way, at a different pace, and much of the fun for me in the process of teaching is improvisation: discovering which methods work best for each student. I believe foremost in teaching students to take responsibility for their own learning: I will teach how to learn, and I will try to develop a student's passion for a subject, but I expect students to work toward their own development. As a teacher I am patient and empathetic and if one explanation is not sufficient, I have no problem trying more. I believe learning doesn't have to be difficult or boring. One good teacher can change the world for a learner.
