I worked with the Minnesota Literacy Council tutoring adult learners in basic math and reading skills. I attempted multiple approaches with each person until we found one that allowed the learner to make sense of the symbols and language. I encouraged the ability to work at the material until the learner could make it his/her own in some way. I also trained new employees each month in the use of a software program at a pharmaceutical company. Employees were required to learn the program regardless of experience and ability with computer programs. I was challenged to engage disinterested employees, encourage frustrated employees, and meet the demands of highly inquisitive employees while maintaining focus on the required information.

I love teaching because I truly enjoy seeing the light come on when a student gets it. I have had some excellent teachers in my life and have used their techniques to help students I tutor. I understand there is not one specific way to teach a subject and the key is asking questions to find out what will help a particular student. I find it helpful to use processes students are familiar with and expand upon that knowledge. I am a firm believer in showing why something works the way it does, not just showing the solution. I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career. I was a teachers aid at the University of Minnesota for three years in the anatomy department. I was a the lead embalmer for the University and worked for the Anatomy bequest program. I was licensed in mortuary science in 2007 and have been working as a funeral director and Retail manager for the past three years.
