I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I will implement practices and materials I think will fit the student's profile. I feel a teacher wears many hats and you must be prepared to wear a different one any day.

My comments on tutoring Sociology : A favorite subject.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During my many years of teaching, tutoring, substitute teaching, and youth ministry work, I have worked with a wide variety of students from urban and suburban environments. I've always enjoyed learning, earning a BA in Secondary Education (summa cum laude) and an MA in English from John Carroll University. I have taught all areas of English and have tutored in everything from history to algebra. My greatest strengths lie in helping students learn to write coherently, read fluently, and prepare adequately for the ACT.
I have worked with high school students reading at a third grade level as well as those who could succeed at an Ivy League school--and have appreciated all of them. I especially enjoy the challenge of motivating the under-achiever or capturing the interest of the student who is frustrated in a typical classroom. I also love seeing how a student who is "left-behin ... read more

As a Professional Counselor I have learned to interact with others in a very respectful, sensitive way. It is my job to lead people to conclusions without actually telling them the answer. I believe this is very similar to teaching. I have spent the last 3 ½ years working with parents that have at-risk and out of control teenagers. I had to teach them parenting skills as well as coping skills. I used many different techniques to do so including modeling and role-play. We went over worksheets together and practiced changing interactions. In my undergraduate years I tutored other students in the math lab. These were students that were in Algebra or college math. I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology so I took through Calculus II as well as Quantitative methods and statistics. I have always considered math and science to be my strong suits.

I would like to continue to develop my teaching skills while creating a challenging and fun learning environment for students. The middle school age group is particularly appealing to me, because students are very impressionable, interesting in learning, and open to new concepts
I have worked with both elementary and middle school teachers, as well as camp directors to develop curricula that meet the needs of students. I enjoy tutoring students and helping them build confidence in their ability to achieve, both academically and socially. In addition, I have artistic and computer skills that will be an asset when developing class projects

A Little Bit About Me...

I have found that children respond to learning with a great deal of enthusiasm, patience and freshness. I take great pride & fulfillment in being a teacher, and I would surely enjoy the opportunity with your student.
My teaching experience, coupled with related activities outside the classroom has provided me with a diverse background with much to offer to the position of computer tutor for the Ann Arbor college. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan in Flint this May, 2008. Prior to that, I had an extensive student teaching experience in both suburban and urban school districts. During my years in education, I have focused on teaching learning concepts to students in a manner that is easy to understand for students with all kinds of learning abilities.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored in a community college for the last year. I also tutor Chinese students in math and biology; I speak Chinese and understand the language barriers that face non-speaking English students. I got my B.S years ago .I went back to school in my forties .I also tutor Psychology and Sociology I have several papers in review on Psychology related issues. I am President of our schools research group.
I love teaching. I feel children learn differently .Some children are visual while other children are lecture oriented. I have many ways of teaching, but I feel actual interaction works the best. I also feel that an approach to the big picture of how the material fits into the everyday life situations helps. I like to feel if you take the anxiety out of the material students learn with an open mind. Learning should be fun and rewarding.

I can’t imagine myself not spending the rest of my life teaching. I have worked both in the educational field and the corporate world and without a doubt I know with whom my heart belongs. I aided a varying degree of students needs such as: grammatical usage, content flow and structure, topic generation, sentence structure, MLA/APA implementation, research methods, written language norms, etc. I have great passion for both education and learning which I hope to share with every student with whom I work. From my time with English Club, I found there is very little advantage for either party when the teacher is draconian. Giving the student little rewards, plenty of encouragement, and being patient work much better. I like to try to understand the student on a personal level, so I can make him or her comfortable. Does the student prefer an informal session or to work hard the entire time? Will jokes encourage or distract? Questions like these are key to creating the best learning environment.
For two years I was an ESL teacher in Japan with the company English Club. While there, I acquired unique experience in the field of education. Not only did I have to design and tailor each class to the student's abilities and age, but I had to come up with creative ways to relay the material given the constrains on communication. I also have tutoring experience with 826 Michigan in Ann Arbor, ... read more
