I feel that each child needs to feel appreciated and successful. My sessions include, of course, language, music, or speech, but I also work in philosophy, history, and technology. I feel that students of today are not receiving as much well rounded education as they desire, or need, for the future workplace or self-satisfaction. My students not only feel that they are learning a language or how to play and instrument, but that they are acquiring real world skills that will help them succeed in whatever field they choose. I have always loved working with children. My teaching style is friendly, and casual, but still quite demanding. I try to create a comfortable and fun tutoring environment, but within that environment I challenge my students to work past their difficulties to reach levels of achievement they may not have previously believed themselves capable of. In order to create this environment I tend to incorporate games, novels, and fun worksheets that are right at the edge of a student's comfort level into my lessons. To me, learning is best exemplified by an engaged and interested student asking informed and critical questions of the material assigned. I believe that students are more apt to achieve such education in a relaxed atmosphere. As the instructor, I may know more than the student(s), but this does not necessarily imply that I am the more insightful or intelligent person. Therefore, I encourage my student(s) to question myself and their peers, to not accept history at face value, and to not view historical study as a series of “facts” that are dictated to passive students as “truth.” My role as teacher is that of facilitator; I am there to provide the historical context and skills necessary for generating such critical assessments.
