A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in a constructivist approach to education. Stusents come with prior knowledge of topics. My goal is to get those students to connect prior knowledge with new information. I also believe that there are mltiple ways that students learn. They can have multiple intelligences in several areas, such as artistic, kinesthetic, or visual and spatial. My challenge is to assess each student's learning style and then design activties that work to that style. EVery student can learn, and my goal is to facilitate that learning.
I returned to school in 2007 to pursue a career in education. In several corporate positions, I was responsible for training new employees in various store operations. I believe that every child has the unalienable right to experience some success each and every day of their lives. My approach is hands-on, student centered and nurturing. I believe in learning by discovery and the use of manipulatives in a manner whereby the student learns without even knowing it. The discovery approach is best to grasping knowledge but to process any and all information is tantamount. Knowing what to do with the information is far more important than just possessing it. As a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College, I had the opportunity to work in small work group settings and learned the value of tutoring firsthand. throughout high school, I had the opportunity to tutor younger students in first and second grade. Upon graduation, I was able to return to my old school and teach high school students how to excel in public speaking and forensic debate. These experiences have had a profound impact on my life.
