Organic Chemistry is one of my top subjects! One of the best breaks from lab work in graduate school was teaching and tutoring! I have taught as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for three years in organic chemistry (6 semesters), teaching both in the lab and in the class. During this time, I also tutored for both Organic Chemistry I and II on the side (class or lab). I also have four years of actual organic chemistry research under my belt!

I am animated and like to use analogies and humor so the students can recall concepts we've covered. Having spent hours upon hours in the organic chemistry student help room at Ohio State, I know all the problems students normally run into. I firmly believe in a visual style of learning, which pairs well with the visual subject matter of organic chemistry.
While I initially went to graduate school to become a research scientist, my focus shifted to teaching after I found out I enjoyed it so much! I took on multiple students in one-on-one tutoring sessions every semester, and helped them to succeed in organic chemistry. College students fear organic chemistry more than most classes, but I assure you I can make it not only understandable, but pretty simple! There are a handful of basic principles (pKa, electronics, reactivity, etc.) that I use in concert with a student's homework, ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am a believer in learning and understanding concepts and principles of the subject being studied. Asking why and how we come to a conclusion rather than memorizing or mindlessly going through steps generates long term success. I believe that this is the best way for a student to prepare for any question or scenario that may be asked or given as well as preparing for future expansion in the subject.
I am a pre-med student at MTSU, and I will be graduating with a second degree in Science this year. I have experience tutoring grade school students in math and reading subjects. I also have experience teaching college students in science subjects. Before attending MTSU, I was a professional ballroom dancer and instructor for five years. I have experience teaching ballroom dancing to children as young as five and adults as young as 70!

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Mad Scientist, I learned how to make learning science fun. I like to spend a session with my students learning their background and their learning style. My students have always appreciated my ability to look at problems and subjects from different angles. I like to use every day metaphors for teaching math problems and also try to teach students how to use a "process of elimination" style. For example, it is easier to identify whether or not an object is a cell phone by picking out one trait that a cell phone has and determining if the object has that trait rather than describing all the traits of the object and then determining if it is a cell phone.
While obtaining my chemistry degree at Butler, I also completed all requirements for a secondary education license with the exception of student teaching and worked as a math and science tutor with a private tutoring service ... read more

As a summa cum laude college graduate and a future medical school student starting in August, I have always strived for perfection during my college education. Receiving a B.S. in biology with a minor in chemistry, I have a very strong knowledge base in these sciences. However, due to the variety of classes required for admission to medical school, I have a strong foundation in subject matter such as physics and verbal reasoning, as well as writing skills, which are applicable to all classes. During the last 2 years I have tutored students in subjects such as cell biology, genetics, immunology, anatomy and physiology, general and organic chemistry, and physics.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching others. Seeing a student have that “aha” moment when they finally understand a concept gives me a great feeling of accomplishment. I always try to cater to each student based upon their previous e ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have student teaching experience in physical science at the eighth grade level as well as biology at the high school level. I also have prior tutoring experience at a sylvan learning center where I tutored students in basic math, science homework support and ACT prep in science. I'm currently substitute teaching and tutoring a family of three children all in the sciences.
I believe that all children have the potential to become successful, lifelong learners. I also believe that I have the kindness and patience that's required to work one-on-one with students and help explain difficult concepts in a way that they can understand. It is very important to listen to the students and ask them where they are having trouble, and help explain the concepts slowly and clearly. I also understand how some students may feel because I, too, needed a tutor at one time in high school.

I have had a long practical career in environmental consulting which gave me many real life experiences that I can draw from for examples. Being a Chemistry major, I have exceptional knowledge in Science and Math. I have worked with children from Elementary to High School. I have tutored/taught highly intelligent children and some resource students. Working as a substitute teacher, I developed many techniques and strategies to get children to understand. While working at a Youth Development Center, I engaged with teenage girls whom were not interested in learning, but I was able to gain their attention and get them involved in the learning process. Many of these students, I helped prepare for the GED test, a test that I scored highly on myself.
All children grasp concepts in different ways and from different methods. I have gained experience on how to pin point a child's learning style and have learned how to become more effective by teaching at a child's pace and level of understanding. So, my teaching style is depe ... read more

Over the past ten years I have been a student (BS), an engineer, a teacher, and a student again (MS, PhD). My interests in education have led me from the high-need classrooms on Chicago's West side to Vanderbilt's Peabody campus to engage a PhD program in educational policy. I have a wide body of experience ranging from coaching gymnastics and circus arts to university level chemistry and teacher education courses. Over the past several years, I have found the teaching-learning cycle to be incredibly rewarding.
Through my work with elementary, high school, and college students, I understand the anxieties that often surround math, science, and high pressure assessments. In tutoring and in the classroom I work to develop individualized scaffolding to build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to successfully engage the material. Everyone has had that one special teacher that truly cared for their students and was passionate about what they taught. It is that type of teacher that can change the course of a students life. For me to have the opportunity to teach would be my chance to have a positive impact on a young mind that may or may not be teetering on the edge of giving up. It is a teachers job to provide the information necessary to learn the subject at hand, but beyond that, I feel a teacher should strive to inspire passion in their students. One of the best ways to help a student is through empowerment. Teach them the basic mechanisms, so they can apply those mechanisms to each system and subject they encounter. It is more important to teach them to learn than to teach them to regurgitate what is in a text book.

I enjoy finding out a student’s area of difficulty and address it directly. Students have different learning styles, it easy for me teach in a variety of styles so that to make sure my students understands. I do also apply almost everything I teach to real world situations, for example most young students may think that learning about triangles will not benefit his/her career in business. As his/her teacher I will show the student how one can use triangles to determine where to built a manufacturing company equidistant (meaning the distant between each raw material supply place to the manufacturing place is the same) to three raw material supply areas, which are not in the same place.
