A Little Bit About Me...

Because of my love for literature, I decided to engage in the teaching profession. I earned my BA at Salisbury University and immediately was offered a job teaching high school English. While teaching, my love for reading and writing continued to grow and influced me to pursue a masters degree in Reading Specialization. I currently teach 6th grade language arts and am spreading my love of reading, writing, and grammar to each class that I teach.
My teaching philosophy is that, as educators, we must "teach the whole person". Because of my experience in teaching my own children, I have discovered that no child is too young to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four. Open and flexible.Rule #1 is to listen to the student. Rule #2 is to teach the other the way I would want to be taught. My preference in teaching is to first teach the student the practical side of things. Can the student perform the basic calculations for example so as to pass the exam. Once the student has developed a "gut level understanding", then I can move onto the more theoretical understanding of the topic, depending of course on where the student is at. I try to make math relevant to life for math is a metaphor.
My formal background is in mathematics and statistics. I have been a computer programmer since 1984 for companies including Intel and Motorola. I am a devout reader in a wide swath of topics and authors. My yearning has been to mix scientific exploration while performing a social good.
