My comments on tutoring Finance : Former multi-billion dollar hedge fund risk manager

There are three important things that seem very simple that I have learned about tutoring. a) Everyone is scared So much of learning is about dealing with these really harmful notions of self-doubt. I know a guy with a Nobel prize - really, a made in Sweden genuine Nobel prize and he claims that he wrestles with self-doubt when he learns something new. Sometimes my job as tutor is just to get rid of the self-doubt and assure you that you are making progress towards understanding. b)Most of the learning takes place in these short "Aha!" moments and they might be only seconds away. Teaching is really about facilitating learning. The key to good teaching is to find the obstacles, misunderstandings, irrelevancies, etc that are stopping you from the moment of clarity when the subject opens up and you say "That's it?". Sometimes people quit trying when they are literally a couple o ... read more

My comments on tutoring Finance : I am an Ivy League Finance major MBA and enjoy teaching.

Business executive looking to assist elementary and high school children with their studies. I am a voracious reader and a life-long learner. I like children, have had exposure to tutoring before, enjoyed it immensely, was very good at it (in the sense that the children enjoyed my friendly manner and enjoyed the learning experience) and would like to help children remedy deficiencies and perhaps even learn how to enjoy learning as much as I do.
Friendly, non-threatening, clear and accomplishment-oriented.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have two daughters, two years apart, but only one grade apart. They both do very well academically and embrace the process of learning. At home we focus more on learning and how to search for answers than on simple memorization. I have found that this has given Emma and Claudia an advantage over their peers, as neither are "hung up" on what they remember, but focus on how to use what they've learned and to apply it as a tool in learning increasingly challenging and rewarding concepts. That written, the paths they travel in the searching/learning process are very different and a reflection of each personality. I am very tolerant and have found that appealing to a child's sense of humor is a very important first step to putting them at ease. Temper this encouragement with a consistent standard for success, I have found that all individuals rise to the challenge. Lastly, I strive t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is a combination of serious, in-depth theory and practical examples to demonstrate such theories, all with a hint of humor, followed by significant practice of the newly learned skills. I've been "teaching" people all of my business career. I always start with the underlying theory and immediately segue into a practical example of how the principles work. I think students want to learn, but need the information presented in a way that makes learning interesting, not boring. I have that ability. I'm able to integrate relevant practical examples because I have a very broad range of experience, having been an entrepreneur and turnaround management consultant for over 40 years.
I taught a computer "cap-stone" class to graduating seniors part-time at the Katherine Gibbs school for 1 semester. There were approximately 14 Seniors in the class and we utilized all ... read more

I taught a wide variety of business related courses; Accounting 1 &2, Automated Accounting, Business, Math, Automated Data Processing, Business Law, Introduction to the Stock Market and Investing, Workplace Readiness, Introduction to Business, Business Management, Web Page and Graphic Design, Introduction to the Internet, and Computer Literacy. I also taught Algebra I and a math class in a GED. program.
I like to first of all evaluate my student(s) and determine what approach will give them the greatest chance for success. When it comes to difficult material I break it down into small modules so that it is not too over whelming for the student. There are very many learning styles which need to be recognized, and I alter my approach to best serve the learning style of the student.

First, I believe a successful teacher allows the student to emerge in their individual creativity while grooming the student to play a significant role in a team environment. Second, a teacher must allow for mistakes to be made during the learning process as they are often quite instructive. Third, the most important thing about learning is not just in memorizing factual data for an exam, but in understanding how to apply knowledge to everyday situations. Finally, a good teacher knows where to lovingly apply discipline because a good balance of encouragement and discipline results in mutual respect between teacher and student and teaches the student proper boundaries.

I believe that a good education paves the path for successful careers. Achieving a level of excellence in school opened up opportunities for me when I first graduated from college in the Accounting program. My dream was to work in the investment banking industry. Based on my academic achievement, I received a job offer to work in a prestigious Wall Street firm. After spending over a decade in this industry, I wanted to utilize my business knowledge to teach others. I had tutored my son for years and realized the difference that my efforts had made on his grades. I pursued a graduate degree in Education followed by my teaching certification. I enjoy the rewards derived from working with young people.

With the objective to make the students autonomous learners, a delegator teaching style matches my way of coaching. It tends to place much control and responsibility for learning on individuals or group of students. The scholars will have a choice in designing and implementing their own learning projects and I will play a consultative role. It will help students see themselves as independent learners. They will not only understand the course material but also how to learn it.

My undergraduate degree in English and a Juris Doctor degree was a foundation for my career in writing, editing and research in the financial communications field. I have learned about the importance of clarity, detail and accuracy in writing. As an editor, I was responsible for reviewing, proofing and suggesting changes to copy on a wide range of subjects. In addition, my early years as a Juvenile Probation officer has taught me about patience and sensitivity when working with the young. I have taught Business Law at the undergraduate level for several semesters. My coaching and assisting my two children during their school years is, I believe also relevant. My guidance has led them to achieve academic success in their undergraduate education.

I believe in encouraging all individuals to read, write and learn in a positive way that best fits his or her specific learning needs. The best teacher helps guide a student through the process hands-on and finds the way to make it clear to that person on their level through gentle discovery and practice.
