My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I was the dyslexia coordinator and teacher for our middle school for 3 years.

I have taught Special Education within the public school system for 16 years. The subjects targeted have been Math (K - 8), Language Arts (K - 8), Reading (K - 8), Social Studies (K - 5), and Science (K - 5). The regular education curriculum has always been followed for instruction and my students have done well in learning the material and scoring well on the TAKS/STAAR.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching in the area of communication disorders for 19 years. Many students are slow and labored readers, due to the fact that they do not "hear" and process sounds or phonics as well as others. I recently learned that dyslexia has many of the same characteristics as those seen in students who are hard-of-hearing, so I attended a workshop to learn the Wilson method of teaching students who are dyslexic. Teaching in both areas requires seeing reading in a different way. If your child has difficulty reading, can't decode words, or seems to have become discouraged with reading and given up, they may need a "different" approach!
