I prefer to instruct by example. I found that with sign watching and repeating work best. I like to work with the person at their pace. Running through the material as fast as possible helps no one. I have spent the last two years in college and have gained my associates degree in ASL. I aspire to become a teacher of ASL at the high school level. I enjoy signing and aim to share my enjoyment with others learning the language. I don't pretend to be perfect at it nor will I expect others to be so. We all learn at different paces and different ways. This skill takes time just as much as any other. My instructors have encouraged me to push myself and learn as much as I can.

I'll be honest. My "students" from the past have told me that during the time when I was actually sitting down and tutoring/working with them, they didn't even notice that they were actually doing the work. What I do when I try to make the "students" learn is to make them see what the books are trying to say to them through what we see through our eyes, in our world, every day. For example, if the book says: 7 - x = 4, I would be telling the child/adult, "Imagine if you had 7 dollars in your hand." I would then ask them, "How many do I need to take away (subtract) for you to have 4 dollars?" When working with the lower kids, I even use the actual objects and lay them on tables in front of me and show to them so they don't have to use their imagination to figure it out. Or if the page has picture on it, just cross them out if subtracting, or draw more if adding. I was an Instructi

It seems to me that everyone can learn, in different ways and at different times. My approach is to have several options of which approach will be successful. Being a 1:1 teacher allows me the freedom and time to work with a student on a concept in a number of ways until the cognition sets in for him. Being enthusiastic and excited about the learning experience is contagious. I always think about the teachers who were indifferent compared to the ones who were animated. I am definitely animated, excited, and enthusiastic. I believe in combining visual, tactile, and aural whenever possible. My experience in the teaching field has been primarily as a substitute on a daily basis. I have some long-term sub assignments in my resume as well. For the past 7 years I have limited my assignments to "Home/Hospital". I meet 5 hours per week with each student to provide complete instruction in al

For me, relating to children is effortless; I am quite apt to quickly gaining their attention as well as their confidence. Sadly, many students face the challenge of losing focus; as a teacher, I hope to be able to instill unwavering motivation and drive into each student, and help shape their characters that is essential in fulfilling a rewarding life as they enter into adulthood. All it takes is an influential mentor who is willing to put in 110 percent long after school hours are over. Educators should not only teach, but also still strive to continue to expand their own knowledge in order to exemplify to our students the importance of opening one's mind and broadening one's perspectives. My experience with teaching began in 2004 as a volunteer for William Saroyan Elementary School in Fresno, CA. I went on to graduate from CSUFresno with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology; Science is my p

I believe every child is capable of matching and exceeding our highest expectations. Every child learns differently and that is my approach. I don't believe in cookie cutter education. I design programs around students interests, needs, and abilities. I believe that positive feedback and reinforcement get better results than negativity, and it is my job to help your child be successful. It is my job to help your child buy into their own education and realize how great it is to be a lifelong learner. I have been working with students since I was in Middle School myself. I went to college to become a special education teacher and am currently working as a resource specialist. I work with students who have learning disabilities, are at risk, have emotional disturbances, autism, or just need a helping hand. I have also taught in general education classrooms.
