Learning starts with a desire, followed by perseverance

I have a high level of experience teaching in multiple fields. I have trained horses, which takes non-verbal communication, patience, kindness, clear directions, and strong leadership skills. I have taught horseback riding lessons for 7 years, which has taught me excellent communication skills, lesson-building skills, and flexibility. I have worked as coordinator for a barn, from which I gained high-level organizational skills. I have tutored multiple people in English as a Second Language, several in America on a one-on-one basis. I taught an ESL class of five boys ages 12-14 in an orphanage on the East side of Amman, Jordan. I have also taught a class of seven women of the community in East Amman as well, both of these positions involved people with no English skills (not even hello). With the boys, as it was an afterschool class, we focused on vocabulary and games. With the women, we ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I worked for a program called CalSoap (College Knowledge). The program had us working in classrooms, at a local highschool, helping the teachers with tutoring the students. I worked in an algebra 2 and geometry class as well as did lunch and after school tutoring. I also tutored 1st graders when I was in 6th grade in reading skills.
I love being able to help children better understand their material. That is the best part of being a tutor or teacher because you get to see the light bulb finally go off when the child understands it and the joy they feel. When I tutor I do not just give the child the answer I constantly ask them what they think the next step is or how they would go about starting the problem. If it involves a formula or the kid is still confused I have them pull out their book so they can find an example and maybe follow along. Students do not use their books enough ... read more

I love working with students and it is such a joy to watch them learn. I understand that every student has different needs and learns things in different ways and at their own pace. I am kind, patient, and understanding. I believe students learn through discovering the right ways to do things and the reasons, not just regurgitating what an instructor tells them. After making a discovery, consistency and practice help to make it stick. It is my job to help the students reach their potential by providing them with the tools, direction, and explanation they need to help them reach an understanding of their subject.
I hold a BA in English from Saint Olaf College and studied a variety of subjects during my time in the Liberal Arts program. I have worked with many college graduates helping them prepare for the GRE in both the English and Math sections, as well as assisting high school st ... read more

I have 10 years of experience teaching math and computer classes part-time at Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods. I have taught classes in arithmetic, pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, calculus and statistics. I can also tutor for geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, the math portion of the SAT, and the Mathematics Level 1 and Mathematics Level 2 SAT subject tests.
My math teaching experience has been primarily with students who didn't "get it" when they first took classes at a particular level of mathematics. My focus has been to take the material and translate it from the often-impenetrable form found in textbooks to a more accessible, practical presentation. I prefer to characterize mathematics as a language skill where, as in most language classes, exposure to a idea should be followed by enough repeated practice to develop a confidenc ... read more

The key to teaching any age of student is the ability of the teacher or tutor to recognize the students level of need and their adherence to a study regiment. Some students learn best in a conventional step-by-step process, while others learn better with real world applications or a "reason" for a particular concept. I am excellent at recognizing what type of curriculum a student would excel under. The only true difficulties a student can have in any subject is when they believe they are unable to learn the material. Prove to them they can succeed in even the smallest way and you can give them the confidence and interest to succeed through hard work. This is what I can do for your student.
The majority of my experience was obtained directly from my courses of study during my collegiate career. While taking all of my Physics courses math was a very important skill to have and be abl ... read more

I also worked at the learning center through Humboldt State University for about a year. Other than that, I have had multiple students for private tutoring sessions since 2005. In December of 2009 I completed all requirements for a BS in Biology with a Marine Emphasis

I have earned a BA in Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, which has enabled me to expand my knowledge base about international affairs and the maritime industry. This coming March I will graduate with a MS degree in Emergency Management. This degree has given me a fantastic background in understanding leadership and management techniques. During the past four to five years I have been employed as an English tutor by both the College of the Redwoods and the California Maritime Academy.

My style is relaxed. Many students appear frightened of math at first. I cover each subject well, allowing students to ask many questions. I encourage students to work problems while I watch, so I can catch them at the moment they make a mistake. I love teaching students of all ages, in basic math, algebra, statistics, and calculus. I have gotten feedback from students, indicating how much they appreciated my instruction... living for seeing the light come on in a student's eyes.
As a psychology major, at the beginning of my education, I discovered that I had a love and talent for mathematics. Thus I pursued a dual degree in Psychology and Math. I have the natural ability to relate to kids of all ages. I was a waterpolo coach for five years, and a volunteer mentor for the Blue Ox School in Eureka. I tend to be straight forward and open with the kids about why the authors wrote the books, what they wanted their readers to get out of them, and how these authors weaved lessons into a classic storyline. Your children will immediately feel more connected to these books and short stories, and their reading comprehension will increase five fold.
As a Humboldt State University Student I was buried in English for Eight hours a day, five full years. My emphasis was in YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE, and I have read and reread all the books in the California State High School Curriculum multiple times. Since each person has his or her own way of learning, I like to be creative with teaching in order to find a style that best suits the student's needs. Along with traditional teaching methods, such as worksheets and practice sheets, I like to also add a variety of activities (roleplaying, games) that keep the lesson interesting as well as encourage the student to think about the topic from a different angle, perhaps making it easier for them to understand the topic.
With the combination of my education and my work experience, I have developed a strong understanding languages and communication. I'm now an associate faculty member at College of the Redwoods teaching business technology courses.
While at Humboldt State, I completed the College Faculty Preparation Program. This program significantly improved my teaching pedagogy.
