Originally trained as a teacher of Drama and English, I subsequently spent many years working in the theatre, not only in educational situations but also as an actor, director and writer. I have always found that the first and often most important thing a teacher can do is find the obstacles to learning that we all suffer from and seek ways to remove them. In order to effectively teach, I feel it is important to recognize and understand each student's metacognitive learning style. Once that is understood the material can be introduced to them in a way that they can perceive. I also feel that it is important to empower students to have the confidence to think for themselves and understand their own ability to make connections about the material.
