A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

During my first semester of college, I participated in the Triunfo/Triumph Tutoring Program through El Centro Student Services at Colorado State University. This program targets K-5 grade students in the Poudre School District who need mentors to guide them with their studies. I entered Brown University with a desire to become a teacher; the ancient world drew me into pursuing a degree in Ancient Philosophy, during which I studied Ancient Greek. After graduating, I spent two years in the Peace Corps in West Africa, where I taught villagers how to improve their nutrition and crop raising techniques. Upon returning, I decided to return to my original love for teaching, and entered the Master's program at CU in Teaching Latin. During my first year of learning Latin, I became a tutor to an undergraduate during a Teaching Methods course, and have since given long-term private instruction to 2 middle school students, 2 high school students, 3 undergraduates, and 2 adults.
