My comments on tutoring Japanese : I have a strong academic background that has been expanded by more than a decade living and working in Japan. I have extensive use of Japanese in a business setting, including telephone appointment setting/sales, negotiations, and presentations. I also am proficient in 'street-level' Japanese due to my wide experience in the music/performance scene in the greater Tokyo area.

Having lived in Japan for more than a decade, I turned my experience teaching English to helping ex-patriots and students communicate more effectively in Japanese. During that time, I applied the language I had learned post-graduate in the real world working as the only Westerner at a Japanese company as well as in my personal live as a DJ in Tokyo nightclubs to provide my clients with the appropriate communication strategies and cultural background to be able to comfortably navigate Japanese society at any level. Upon return to the US, I have helped students and business professionals meet their personal and professional goals. I look forward to helping you unlock that part of Japan with which you most hope to interact.

More About This Tutor...

If students lack motivation or direction, it’s often because they are trying to perform an advanced task without basic skills. For example, many students know about the “five-paragraph essay” format, but don’t know how to organize the individual sentences. The first part of my philosophy focuses on providing students with these basic skills, as doing so prepares and makes them eager to face their assignments. The second part of my philosophy involves research. When students don’t know something, I’ve found that they will be quick to give up without considering the resources available. By showing students how to teach themselves, I let them know that they do have the opportunity and ability to succeed if they put in the effort.
I first tutored for two years during high school when a family friend asked me to help him teach kids chess at four elementary schools. I thoroughly enjoyed ... read more
