I enjoy teaching young adults, watching "the light bulb go off" as they come to understand concepts that had been eluding them. Math is a subject that centers around understanding and applying a surprisingly modest number of concepts. As such, I focus on the concepts and their relationships, preferring to look at the concepts through varying problems from various domains, rather than through repetitive drill. Learning how to think logically and methodically is an essential skill I look to pass on to my students. During my career as a researcher in the field of software engineering, my work depended on mathematical thinking. I have spent considerable energy, from my time working toward my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in engineering and through my subsequent career, communicating ideas through writing, lecturing, tutoring, and creating and teaching courses. Jennifer W - Sandia Park, NM 87047 (48.2 mi) - Algebra II Tutor - $36.00/hr.
My first two years of teaching were as an intern with the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque Public Schools. I taught 8th grade Math full time at a large public middle school. The next year I continued the same position and added on an after school tutoring program for all grade levels. I then took a position teaching 6,7&8 grade Math at an alternative school for students with severe discipline issues. This was a small setting with classes no larger than 12. I was able to spend a lot of time one-on-one with the students and develop personalized lesson plans that fit their needs and learning styles. I strongly believe in inquiry based learning with the teacher acting as a facilitator or coach. I like to see students heavily engaged in what they are learning, and applying the new skills to daily life.
