I am what you might call a camp kid. I grew up spending summers in the mountains, camping and hiking and when I grew older, working. The foundation of my leadership experience was built in the forrest. For six summers I worked as an outdoor educator and adventure guide, leading groups of students through week long trips into the natural world. I believe in experience as the greatest teacher. As an instructor, I preferred to set up a weekly system, so the students would know what to expect and what was due every time they walked in the door. I would start class with a free write to focus the students; then move to a lecture to support their assignments; next, I would have them break into groups to discuss the lecture and work on in-class assignments to further develop the lecture; and finally, come together at the end of class to open their group discussion to the class as a whole, and get everyone back on the same page, leaving them with assignments and reading for the next session. However, my favorite part was working with students in one on one conferences, because I felt the success was more immediate and productive.

My teaching style would be classified as patient. I was diagnosed with a learning disability myself when I was in third grade, so I know how differently children learn. I was lucky enough to have patient resource teachers to work with and allow me to find my way of learning the material led by them, of course. So I think tutoring is extremely important for success of our children.
