A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.

One of the most interesting things about math, in my opinion, is how everyone can have different understandings of fundamentally similar concepts. One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I engage and interact with my students a lot in order to properly gauge how my students are progressing and what I can do to further help them. Also, I like using 'real world' examples to reinforce a concept and show its practicality in everyday life, but I do not like to introduce concepts through such examples, because often students are not able to generalize enough from the examples to truly understand the concept.
