A Little Bit About Me...

I have been an elementary teacher for more than 25 years; 10 of those years I taught gifted children. My teaching specialties include grant writing with children, community problem solving and story telling using dance. I also have my English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement. In addition to spending more than a decade as a gifted and talented instructor, my other professional experiences include working with multi-age, special-needs and at-risk populations. My background also includes a combined 10 years of experience as a third grade traditional classroom teacher, a pullout teacher for grades four through six and sheltered-instruction teacher for second-language learners.

I want to see you succeed in your studies!

My teaching style is to listen to the student and let them try to work the problem out. If they can't figure the problem out, I give them a similar example to follow and let them use that problem as a model. There is normally a protocol or steps to follow in math. I lead them through the steps using that example. Then they go back to their original problem and normally can do it better. Other subjects require reading like history or economics. I ask them to go back and look more carefully at their reading if they can't get the answers to their questions. In English, I teach them grammar rules and the structure of the 5 paragraph essay.
Academic Tutor: I assist students in learning their academics. Some are homeschooling where I help cover all subjects. Others are college students and cover one or two subjects. WSU Learning Center Coordinator: I managed WSU Tri-Cit ... read more

My teaching style is very distinctive to the students learning needs. I believe that the educator is a facilitator of the information and must be able to differentiate the instruction to the needs of the learner. I also believe that the educator must provide meaningful instruction and assessments to show the student their growth and gains throughout the teaching. Most importantly, providing a safe and excepting environment is my goal, fostering higher level thinking and progress in students.
As a recent college graduate with my BA in elementary education I am highly motivated to provide learner centered tools to engage and motivate students. My experience as a teacher has given me the opportunity to teach math, science, history, literature, reading and writing to a very diverse group of students. These students vary in development, both academically and socially, and I adjust my delivery of instruction to meet the needs of all. I continue to work with students who function above, on and below grade level expectations and together we meet or exceed the classroom teacher’s expectations. In following Constructivist methods of instruction, we use class discussion, open ended questions and cooperative learning to facilitate a highly interactive and inquisitive classroom atmosphere.
In my instruction I apply research-based strategies, theories, new techniques, and modern methods of instruction. I put a lot of thought and work in to creating my lesson plans. This can be seen in the detail that I provide on each plan. I p ... read more
