Throughout my undergraduate years, I was recognized as an outstanding student and held the maximum number of teaching assistant positions every semester. As a person who holds both a BA and MA in English, each with concentrations in writing (creative and technical, respectively), I am qualified to, and have for several years, tutored English language studies skills, including composition, grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehesion, to students from the third grade through college. I have also taught English composition at the college level. Additionally, I have tutored students from primary to secondary school in other liberal arts subjects where English language and study skills are applicable, such as social studies and history. I have 16 years teaching elementary grades 1 through 3. During this time I taught Compensatory Education for 2 years in 1st grade, 4 years in 2nd grade and 1 year in third grade. In the Compensatory Education classes I would receive the poorest readers and worked with them throughout the school year. The 3rd grade Comp-Ed class all started as poor readers and ended the year by all passing the reading portion of the Texas TAAS test. I had a 1st grade class for 5 years and 2nd grade for 4 years. My teaching style depends on the student and subject I'm dealing with. For the non-reading adults I started by teaching them letter recognition and basic sounds; moved on to simple words; then sentances. During my college class I would review the evening's lesson and goals, then have the students perform the exercise in the textbooks. During the practical exercise I made myself available to all the students and gave one-on-one instruction to those that needed it. I taught all subjects for adult learners preparing for the GED tests through Region IX Education Services Center's Adult Education program for 4 years in the evenings.
