For the first three years out of the university, I was a school librarian, and was board certified K-12 by the Washington State Board of Education as a result of this experience. From 2006-2008, I have been tutoring writing at Northern New Mexico College, from 4th grade remedial level through college papers in all subjects. I am presently working in an Upward Bound program for 9th graders, to help increase their study skills. I believe that students need to be challenged. When they are highly challenged, they really produce. In my tutoring experience, my students' test scores rose two grade levels in ten weeks because they were challenged. Previously, these students were thought to not be able to speak, read, or write English, and were pre-testing at very low grade levels.

I have worked in both industry and government working on a worldwide basis with people of varying cultural backgrounds. I have traveled extensively in my profession. Over the last several years I have been involved with several business and working extensively with the Native American pueblo communities. In terms of tutoring, teaching, or mentoring I have worked with children of all ages in reading and math tutoring principally as a volunteer. Professionally, my work has been in mentoring young adults and technical training. In teaching I am basically a generalist and humanist. My background is in mathematics and the sciences, but with a solid foundation in the humanities. Ideally, teaching styles should be individually tailored to the student's needs. The one-on-one environment of tutoring offers an exceptional opportunity to do this! The learning styles of students vary widely; however, I believe all students respond to an approach which includes kindness, respect, persistence, and the acceptance of the student as an individual. I believe in encouraging students to ask questions, and showing them where to find the answers. Although it took me 15 years to obtain my B.S. in Business Management, I do not view that as a disadvantage.
