I have worked with different levels of mental health and emotional maturity for several years. I have spent much of my spare time working within the community at youth centers, soup kitchens and veteran administration homes. I feel that working with many different types and levels of human functioning has enabled me to be more able to adjust my teaching and assisting styles to better serve my community. Each person learns at an individual pace. I use the Gardner system of multiple intelligences to facilitate individual learning style. I like to accommodate to a child's personality and likes to help them to learn through distinct processes. When given the opportunity in the correct manner, children can learn most of what is put in front of them. By using example catered specifically to certain children, they are able to connect to the tutor as well as the subject. As a tutor, I am kind, laid-back and patient. Younger kids seem to gravitate to me, while the older kids relate to me. The teaching style that brings the best success I've found is centered on two points. First of all, it is based on listening, which means getting the student to talk. Eventually, with guidance, I aim to get them the ability to talk through and solve any problem. The second major technique I like to use is analogies. Even complicated subjects can be simplified into their core components which are easy to understand if taught as an analogy to something more familiar in daily life. Just as the Bible uses parables or employers use phrases from team sports to explain team roles, I find lots of success by using analogies. My specialty is reading, writing and research.
