Very patient, friendly, and effective

I find I learn the most when I can relate a subject or theme to something current or more familiar to me. Finding something a student is interested in and trying to break down a complicated matter into simple, easy to remember parts when possible that they can relate to in an easy manner. I find this very effective with students who may have ADHD or just some trouble focusing on occasion.
I have seven years of upper level education experience with a wide variety of subjects. Four of those years I was involved in teaching and tutoring other college students. I also have worked with younger students, mostly with biology, history and research writing. I have done research in various fields of biology, specifically aquatic biology.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a Certified Public Accountant with over 30 years of accounting and finance experience. Although I have no formal teaching degree, I feel that I would be an excellent tutor. First, I have successfully trained many employees over the years. Second, my two sons, ages 21 and 19 graduated numbers 2 and 1 in their high school classes, respectively. Now, both are "straight A" students at the University of Tennessee. Here, I feel that I have lead by example. Finally, my personality, while being friendly and patient, is also that of a highly motivated "over achiever" who loves to help others. I teach both face-to-face and online courses. In my face-to-face courses I usually start with a class discussion on the previous topic. I do this with a series of loaded questions meant to grab the students attention where I then work my way into the next lecture. I like to employ a variety of techniques such as power point and documentaries for student to get a better image of the historical subject at hand. I usually give three paper topics throughout the semester along with four tests. I focus intensely on making students better readers and writers. I have found history is a good means of achieving these goals when a students is given a subject he or she is interested in.

After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1973, I decided that I would enter the field of public education. After 6 years of successful and rewarding experiences in secondary education, I decided to return to college and obtain a Masters Degree in Education. Upon receiving my Masters in 1984, I taught at the post secondary level in both Virginia and North Carolina.
