Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not. My teaching style is a delicate balance of content knowledge, compassion, and flexibility. Obviously, an effective teacher should have a great understand of his or her content area, but knowing how to teach and share that knowledge is the key to an outstanding teacher. I do not see students are not robots that all process information the same, so having the compassion to see each student as an individual with different ways of processing information drives my teaching. I take the time to know and care about my students in order to be able to adjust material to meet the needs of the students as well as the standards. The last component I incorporate is flexibility. I have experience in every level of student. My first degree (A.S.) was in Engineering and I worked at higher level math, including a college Teacher's Assistant in Calculus. I went on to obtain a B.S. in Education. I took the coursework for Middle and High School endorsements in 4 other subject areas. I work in Remedial Education at a local university currently.
I have always believed everyone can learn and everyone has different learning styles. Finding what works for the student is often the key to life-long success. I have a great connection with students and am always a believer they can be successful. Patience, motivation and desire are essential to success.
