A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in starting with the basics in all things. Reading starts with Phonics, and writing starts with Spelling and Vocabulary, as well as old-fashioned handwriting skills. An absolute staple of learning, in my opinion, is frequent reading for pleasure – whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, novels or comic books. I am patient and love to teach, even reluctant learners. I remember what it was like to not want to sit around and do schoolwork, so I don't expect children to be eager to do it. However, I know from experience that those reluctant learners can be turned into students who really enjoy discovering new information and discussing what they’ve learned. There are few things better than watching such a transformation.

I believe a supportive environment is critical for an excellent learning experience. First, I work to set up an environment of mutual respect, a place where the student knows I respect him or her and the student respects me. To accomplish this task, I actively engage with the student by showing an interest in the student's life. Essentially, I get to know the student. I then aim to clarify the subject matter the student finds challenging. If they still find a concept confusing, I approach the topic in an alternate manner. I do not give up on the student or the topic; I believe every student can understand a challenging concept by having a teacher explain it to them in a way the student finds comprehensible.
In high school, I served as a tutor for elementary school students for the state program Ohio Reads. At the University of Pittsburgh, I earned a BA in English Writing with min ... read more

I am a very hands on type of educator. Being a current student myself, I can appreciate the hardships and struggles of education. I feel that you must always level with your students, no matter what the age. The students are the ones who must lead the class. However, we as educators have a duty to guide and to nourish this idea. We must be leaders who encourage a positive and productive learning environment, while also maintaining an enjoyable experience. I believe in a split between communicative and explicit teaching. Students are given input through examples and other meaningful activities. They then are encouraged to attempt their own output through group work, homework, or discussion. At this point, students are prepared to solidify their learning with charts, graphs, mnemonic devices, and/or questions/answer sessions. Finally, new material is segued into the review, restarting the learning cycle. This overlap ... read more

Since high school I have been aware that I wanted to teach. I am currently pursueing a Masters of Education, and finishing one of my specializations, (French). I have taught for several businesses. I also taught for the Worthington Public School system as a volunteer and teaching asssistant.
I try to devote the day to getting kids interested in learning while covering the topics necessary. I cater to each child's needs and abilities and try to use their strength's to help their weaknesses. For example when teaching foreign language, if a child is not as strong in language as they are in math, I try to use formulas to portray language in a more concrete manner. I enjoy working with children of all ages and find that they enjoy working with me due to the enthusiasm I show them.

In my year of graduate school I accepted a position as a teaching assistant. It was my first opportunity to stand in front of a class. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to teach and also help people in subject areas of which you have great expertise and interest. More recently, I have had vast experience working with middle-school students and am currently doing in-home tutoring. I continue to enjoy working with all types of students, especially in mathematics.
In teaching, one must realize that students learn at different rates of speed. Consequently, you need to find a pace at which the student feels comfortable. As most of my experience and interest is in mathematics, I always want to see a student be able to solve problems on their own. It's a great feeling when a student overcomes a hurdle and they realize that they can get the right answer.

As a graduate from Southwestern Assemblies of God University, I have learned to put God first in all that I do. This, in turn, allows me to be a better teacher. I have recently graduated with honors earning my BA in Elementary Education via online classes and completed my student teaching in April. I love to teach and have taught all subject areas in the elementary classroom setting, including math, reading, science, social studies, spelling, and Bible. I love to help students reach their potential to be all that they can be in life.
Every child has a different way of learning; therefore a teacher must have different styles of teaching. I believe students learn best when they can apply what they are learning to everyday life. Using a hands-on approach, and leading students to discover meaning is a great way to learn and teach. All students are teachable, but it is up to the ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Since receiving my BS degree from Ohio State, I worked first as a substitute teacher, then as a paraprofessional with children with a variety of disabilities. Next, for nearly 2 years, I was a Head Start disabilities specialist in northwestern Ohio. Most recently, for the last 7 years, I taught junior high/high school history and English at a private school on a ranch for troubled teenage boys in Washington state. I did have a provisional Ohio teaching certificate, but it expired while I was living in Washington.
I focus on building a positive relationship with each child so that I earn his trust, discover his educational needs, and identify learning strengths and weaknesses.
