During my undergraduate studies, I tutored elementary students in math and science twice a week for two years. After college, I moved into the marine science profession. I like to believe that anyone can learn and understand anything. All it takes is a good teacher and effort. I like to work through a similar problem to the one the student is having a hard time with. Once he or she understands the similar problem, I then ask them to do their problem. If they still have trouble I refer back to the similar problem. Once they have correctly done their problem, we do another problem just like it. We repeat this process until they understand how to do the problems and better yet, understand the concepts and why you do certain things in a particular order to get the correct solution.
