Chef, Reader, Creative Writer, and Resume Writer

I am an extremely patient person. My teaching style stems from that. I encourage those I tutor to set goals for what they want to learn or accomplish and then assist them in working towards those goals.
I am a culinary school graduate and a full-time chef. As part of my chef-ly duties, I regularly find myself teaching cooking techniques and helping people become more comfortable in the kitchen. When it comes to writing, that I do more for my own amusement, but I have always considered myself more of a writer than anything else. I have experience and enjoy training youth in resume writing and goal setting.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have not taught professionally, but I do have to help roommates and classmates with their work on a regular basis. I like to give them little tricks and tips for figuring out different kinds of problems. I don't like to just tell them how to do the problem. Instead I want them to figure it out on their own with my guidance and advice. I am patient but I also want the people I help to succeed.

I think patience and coaching are the most important tools in tutoring. Based on my experience, a rule or lesson is better retained if the student is vested in the answer by their own efforts. That being said, I like to give the tool, the hint, or the rule before I ever just give an answer: that way the student has an opportunity to learn the rule or remember the process for themselves while they figure out the answer. I would never, however, let a student stew in frustration if they could not come up with an answer on their own as that only puts up blockers and hinders learning.
While in law school, I assisted students enrolled in a summer program with residential advising and subject mentoring/tutoring. The program was offered through CLEO and hosted by Valparaiso with classes being taught by visiting professors from participating schools. The program launched students with ... read more

From teaching and tutoring various children I have learned each child has a different understanding of the same subject. I have adapted to help each child I have worked with the achieve their individual understanding and success. Recently, I have helped tutor students in photography classes and I found many teachers push their own style onto the students. I have taken a determined stand against this type of teaching. Each student has a voice and I am willing to hear it.
I have recently graduated from UNLV with a BA in fine art with minors in art history and criminal justice. I have taken classes in education and am pursuing a master's degree in art history so I can teach on the college level. I have taught and tutored many individuals in art, English, and math. My rigorous education has given me substantial insight into the "total package" needed to learn and succeed at a high level. The ability to learn material is critical, and I excel at teaching difficult concepts and skills to a range of different learning "types". However, the ability to organize, prioritize, and focus is equally critical to academic success, and my experience with a wide range of subjects from art and literature to science, social sciences, and business as well as a range of different personalities allows me to teach virtually any subject with a sympathetic understanding of how each individual's personality learns best. Some people learn well step-by-step, others learn better through self-experimentation. My familiarity with a range of learning styles allows me to find the best way to teach each individual.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a very interactive personality. I love to get kids involved in their subjects outside of the textbook. I have seen from years of experience that students do better when the can find real life applications of material in everyday life then just to finish an assignment. I know that there are many different learning styles and no one particular way can be right for every child. I am flexible and want to help children accomplish their learning objectives with excitement and desire to learn more.

A Little Bit About Me...

I think the most important part of instruction is to give the student a framework for learning. I help them solve problems by asking leading questions so that they can develop the intuition for solving problems on their own, of course introducing and explaining basic concepts when necessary. Along the way, I explain insights, tricks, and tools that I use to solve problems. I constantly emphasize and repeat these insights, tools, and tricks until the student remembers them. In this way the student is building and strengthening his intuition.

A Little Bit About Me...

I thoroughly enjoy working with children in a classroom setting. I am a teacher/tutor that is very patient and understanding of children's needs in a school/educational environment. I like to find what interests students and elaborate and expand upon those things. I like to help children delve into what makes them want to learn and enjoy the entire learning process. I like to a great deal of hands on, fun, reading material.
When I was in elementary school I had a really rough time in reading. I dedicated myself to years of being tutored and then in turn, tutoring myself so that I could help students like me in elementary be the best possible readers they could be. I have tutored throughout the years in various subjects, but reading and phonics has always held a very important role in my life. I have tutored, voluntarily, for city organizations, as well as for different school ... read more

My direct experience is with adult learners. In my current position at USA TODAY, one of the largest newspapers in the country, I am heavily involved with technology training. Not only do I work with developing new training materials (from PowerPoint to video to documentation), I also do live classroom training. I tutored younger students for my college internships where I worked with fifth graders. Both short internships were fulfilling, but I ultimately opted to go to the corporate world.
I try to give my students the tools and resources they need to move beyond what they learn in the classroom. It is not enough that a student is engaged in the classroom. He or she needs to be able to apply what they have learned to real world situations. It is always my goal to help students see how to connect what they learn in class to the real world.

Having recently graduated with a master's degree in Literature and Writing, during which I also taught two college-level freshman writing courses, I am well versed in literature, writing mechanics, organization, brainstorming techniques, etc. I have taught high school on the Navajo Reservation. I received an English bachelor's degree from BYU. Also, as a professional writer myself, it is necessary for me to possess a wide knowledge base: mathematics, physics, biology, ecology, geography, etc. I am also fluent in Spanish.
Teaching is a personal act. Though I have enjoyed being in the classroom and seeing students develop as a community of learners, I have seen the most progress by addressing students' individual needs in a one-on-one situation. I see literature as one of most effective ways that people come to understand one another, the act of reading being a fundamentally unselfis ... read more

As an American attending an English college, I was offered the unique opportunity of teaching college students about American authors whilst earning a degree in creative writing. I also received a degree in Religious Studies and I minored in both History and Philosophy which allowed me to study and participate in many different areas of the social sciences. In addition, I was a teacher at a private charter school where I taught all ages from 6 years old up to 18 years of age. Not only did I teach a set curriculum for Reading and Creative Writing, I taught and wrote the curriculum for History, Religious Studies and Music History. I also helped students study for college placement exams.

I spent the last two years in Warsaw, Poland teaching English as a Foreign Language. My duties included planning and preparing daily lesson plans as well as semester course programs, traveling to different locations to teach school-aged children or adults in different environments, keeping records of material covered, preparing and administering exams at the end of each term, and completing reports about students at the end of the year. I have experience teaching children (ages 5 to about 15) and adults. The children I worked with ranged in ability from beginners (at most a few words of English) to upper-intermediate (teenagers with a fairly high level of understanding and communication). As to my education, I have a total of five years of college education, two at Highline and three at WSU. In that time I took a variety of classes, including creative writing, philosophy, psychology ... read more

I enjoy working with children of most ages although I worked mainly with K, first, fourth and high school levels during my four years of experience. I believe everyone has the ability to reach their greatest potential with appropriate help and that sometimes extra assistance can be the difference between success and failure. I use rewards to help children feel better about what they have accomplished. I encourage the use of creativity in learning as long as it does not distract from the lesson that needs to be learned.
During my four years at Case Western Reserve University, I became aware of the needs of the city schools in the area and worked to help improve the situations in the schools. I worked with AmericaREADS, OhioREADS and other similar programs to help tutor children who were not able to get the individual attention they needed in the classroom. Because of my backgro ... read more
