Hello, my name is Lauren and I absolutely love tutoring! I have tutored since I was in high school (about 5 years of experience total)and more recently have worked as a Peer Tutor at Westminster College, as well as teaching private voice and piano lessons. As a biology major, I'm most experienced in science and math related areas, particularly general biology, general chemistry, statistics, algebra, and geometry. I am also very qualified to tutor ACT and SAT test prep, as I scored extremely high in all areas of the two tests, earning a 34 on the ACT and a 2190 on the SAT. I'm also qualified to tutor in several humanities areas, especially writing-a skill strongly emphasized by Westminster's intensive and selective Honors Program. I have also taken AP tests in English Literature (5), Human Geography (5), European History (4), and American History (4) and IB tests in English (6) an ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently between my junior and senior year at Coastal Carolina University where I have a 3.998 GPA. I have received many honors and awards for my academic achievement such as induction to the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. I have always received excellent grades in math and science, but also in the humanities. My mother is a middle school teacher who has taught at all levels of education. I have been to her classes to assist her in teaching her students math and reading skills. I also frequently help my fellow classmates in subjects such as physics, chemistry, and math. I have taken all levels of math courses up through Calculus II.
I have not taught professionally, but I do have to help roommates and classmates with their work on a regular basis. I like to give them little tricks and tips for figuring out different kinds of problems. I don't like to just tell them ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was in the top 10% of my class at an elite college preparatory school and earned a BA in Economics from the University of Chicago. This has exposed me to great teachers and a variety of different teaching styles. I studied cello and piano formally for 7 and 10 years, respectively, and taught cello for 2 years. In high school I taught Adult English-as-a-Second Language classes for 2 years. I've also taught skiing and guided young children in after school art and literature programs for several years. My diverse education and experiences have led to my deep understanding of art, literature, history, math, science, and business. I have written numerous essays on art and literature, research papers, lab reports, and analytical reports.
My rigorous education has given me substantial insight into the "total package" needed to learn and succeed at a high level. The ability to lea ... read more

I have had opportunities to teach in many different settings -ranging from college labs and middle school classrooms to special education and health care settings. Through these experiences it became clear to me that not all people learn in the same way. This said, I believe that there are some general approaches to which all respond well. These include: patience, understanding, organization, and clarity. Nothing is more fulfilling to me than taking a concept that is difficult and foreign and presenting it in a way that people can understand. I will do my best in providing a personalized, professional learning environment for each student with which I work.

I am pretty comfortable in most subjects. I am interested in tutoring because I think I can relate well to students of all ages and I think I can explain the material in simplified and concise manner. I am willing to put in as much time as requested and have a pretty open schedule to work with.
I graduated from the University of Kansas and am currently attending pharmacy school in Denver. I was an undergraduate teaching assistant for Gen Chem II during the spring 2010 semester. I am an extremely patient and positive teacher. I believe that the fundamental gift a teacher can give to their students is the gift of confidence. In my experience the primary obstacle to a student's progress is usually their own disbelief that they can do it. As a teacher, if you can persuade the student to overcome this doubt, the rest of the job simply requires patience and resilience.
I am an aspiring condensed matter physicist with extensive knowledge of chemistry and mathematics. I have experience in the industry working as a researcher and engineer which gave me a deep insight into applying the physical principles I learned in school. I have taught English as a second language in a formal setting and tutored numerous friends and colleagues in matters ranging from introductory physics to technical writing.

Having recently graduated with a master's degree in Literature and Writing, during which I also taught two college-level freshman writing courses, I am well versed in literature, writing mechanics, organization, brainstorming techniques, etc. I have taught high school on the Navajo Reservation. I received an English bachelor's degree from BYU. Also, as a professional writer myself, it is necessary for me to possess a wide knowledge base: mathematics, physics, biology, ecology, geography, etc. I am also fluent in Spanish.
Teaching is a personal act. Though I have enjoyed being in the classroom and seeing students develop as a community of learners, I have seen the most progress by addressing students' individual needs in a one-on-one situation. I see literature as one of most effective ways that people come to understand one another, the act of reading being a fundamentally unselfis ... read more

My teaching style begins with understanding the level of each student's knowledge and learning approach. During my college years I participated in many tutorial sessions realizing that it could provide instructional help as well as social interaction with other motivated students. I believe that tutoring helps a student become more involved in his/her studies, creating a greater interest and a more enduring impact. I can teach very detailed, down to the fundamentals, or using simple examples. The best part about teaching is watching as the students "get it."

I enjoy working with children of most ages although I worked mainly with K, first, fourth and high school levels during my four years of experience. I believe everyone has the ability to reach their greatest potential with appropriate help and that sometimes extra assistance can be the difference between success and failure. I use rewards to help children feel better about what they have accomplished. I encourage the use of creativity in learning as long as it does not distract from the lesson that needs to be learned.
During my four years at Case Western Reserve University, I became aware of the needs of the city schools in the area and worked to help improve the situations in the schools. I worked with AmericaREADS, OhioREADS and other similar programs to help tutor children who were not able to get the individual attention they needed in the classroom. I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style varies depending on the type of students I am teaching to because I believe that each student has a particular learning style that they find easier. I think that it is important to find the types of learning that each student finds easiest to understand, and tailor the course so that it works well with their particular learning abilities. This can easily be done in a classroom setting as well as an individual basis. In either case, while I am teaching I think that it is important to understand the topic we are on before moving to the next one. Slowing down to completely grasp each idea helps students to gain confidence in their learning ability, and actually helps the classroom or individual to progress much faster overall. Giving students a hope for their future ability to learn is one of the best things I can do for them.
In preparation for college, I knew that ... read more

I love working with students one on one to develop a tailored approach that will work best for the student. Once we discover together the most appropriate method to access the material, I find that students thrive quickly. I am patient and determined and I thoroughly enjoy watching my students succeed with my help.
As a Duke graduate, I have had a very well rounded liberal arts education and am thus well acquainted with a variety of subjects. While my degree is in Spanish literature and history, I have had experience tutoring students in math and English as well.

As a teacher, I prefer a student-directed teaching style over a teacher-directed learning style in the classroom. I believe that setting up lessons where the students develop concepts and do most of the critical thinking is most important for their education, self-esteem and self-empowerment. The teacher is there to guide and mentor students to a preselected objective by asking well thought through questions and providing ideas to consider. As a tutor, I would assess the student's prior knowledge and start building concepts in small managable steps so the student can more deeply understand the materials and start making connections to the topics being taught in class.
