Every child can learn, so every child deserves to learn.

I have been teaching children younger than myself since I started teaching Sunday school classes and became a adolescent influence in my previous youth group. I new all along I was going to be a teacher. I have been tutoring my younger nephews since they are now in grade level courses. I have also had experience in the classroom as observing mentor teachers and assisting them in lesson plan creations. I will be enrolled in methods course this coming fall for my Elementary Education Professional Teaching program.
I teach in the way of Scaffolding. I give the learner all the assistance they need until they no longer need it any more. I start by giving a lot of cues and help with each step. Then I slowly take the training wheels off and each time, I let them show me more and more what they can do with out the help. I hope to create leaders.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am energetic and involved. I am a strong believer in the use of visual and other aids. I feel the best teaching can occur when it is interactive. I am highly computer literate, and regularly interject this medium.
My experience is principally in marine research. In such, I have taught at three universities. Most recently I have been giving scheduled seminars for several years. I am semi-retired. My science background is mult-disciplinary. I enjoy most teaching ecology (both marine and terrestrial), geology, biology, physics, and chemistry. I have worked in this field on the west coast for twenty years, and about fifteen on the east coast. My principal fields of work have been geo-physics, and population ecology. Most of my recent work has been in Chesapeake Bay.

More About This Tutor...

I try to guide the student to find a personal understanding of the concept. It is one thing to explain a point of difficulty to the student, but it is preferable for the student to be led to an intuitive understanding. It is my goal in teaching to facilitate the student in finding this type of understanding.
I have gained a solid understanding of many disciplines of math and science through my study of Physics. I have honed my writing and general English skills through the writing of laboratory reports, essays, and the completion of a thesis project. I have more than six years of experience tutoring students in math, science, history, and English.

A Little Bit About Me...

While an undergraduate at Maryland I tutored students and helped my friends in chemistry and math. When I went to Graduate School I taught lab and two discussion sections, making sure the students understood the lecture material from the Professor. I have knowledge in general chemistry as well as extensive knowledge of Organic Chemistry. I tutored my daughter by helping her understand the underlying reasons for a reaction vs. just memorizing a huge list of organic reactions.
My style is to focus on the reason for a reaction so you can extrapolate what will happen with materials your have not seen before. This was the technique used when I took graduate level organic courses at Maryland.

I have tutored and mentored in the Seaford School District for 4+ years under the Junior Achievement Program and have worked more informally with my three children and their friends in Math and Science. I have organized and produced "Mr. Science" shows for PTA functions and taught math concepts through the use of Color to show the benefit of learning both Cartesian and Polar coordinates in a fun environment for in-class instruction and summer programs. I was recognized as "Volunteer of the Quarter" in the Seaford Pride magazine.
I enjoy working with students in small groups, or one-on-one, I believe that in order to help a student succeed in a subject matter in is first necessary to show him/her a real life application of the skill set you are teaching. If you are teaching successive addition or subtractions, the use of a checkbook, and mock purchases, will allow the student to ... read more

While at Salisbury University, I studied Environmental Issues and firmly believe in the theory I learned that education in the beginning for everything. I have always loved learning, and as a result, I also pursued a minor in Chemistry, for the sheer love of science. Immediately after college, I spent the summer teaching riding lessons at a camp in Colorado. In the evenings, I took off my cowboy boots and spent my time acting as co-counselor in a cabin full of elementary to middle school aged girls, depending on the session. Since returning from Colorado, I have spent my time as a substitute teacher. I have taught students in Pre-K, all the way up to 12th grade. During my time teaching, I have been selected for two long-term positions.
I’ve always enjoyed teaching others, whether I was a kid tacking up my pony and giving informal riding lessons or leading fellow undergrad student ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is constructivist, meaning it all depends on the learner. Every learner has a different style, and I try to match that style. The important thing to me is that at the end of the day, the learner has truly learned and understands the concepts at hand.
I have three years of experience teaching at the high school level, including chemistry, physics, and physical science. I have also worked in the pharmaceuticals industry, where I learned much about the practical use of chemistry.

I would say that my teaching style is very interactive. Anyone can give instructions but I love feedback from a one on one situation as well as a group environment. I base alot of my instruction on analogies; when a person can relate an experience or another word to a term being tought, their understanding is broadened and 99% of the time embedded in the longterm memory. That to me is not only developing the ability to draw on a built up knowledge base, but also broadens ones ability to convey what has been learned.
I have always wanted to teach. When I was a child I would round up the kids in my neighborhood and make them do lessons that I created. I do remember they did not like that. I went to college and earned a BS in Biology always knowing that I would eventually teach the sciences. I was an excellent student and have always found pride in myself on my ability to communi ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As an undergraduate, I became a chemistry tutor for two high school students in my junior and senior years. This experience led me to return to college for post-baccalaureate work in order to receive certification in the state of Maryland for education in chemistry. Additionally, I received a physics minor which benefited me greatly when I began my educational career in Maryland teaching various levels of high school chemistry and introduction to chemistry and physics for 7 years. As a part of teaching these courses, I also have had to teach algebra I skills which are necessary in order to be successful in these courses. I also have experience in the classroom working with students with learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD.
My educational philosophy is simple: all students can learn—you just have to find out the best way(s) for each student. Once I have assessed how your child l ... read more

The most important qualities of outstanding educators are experience, creativity, and patience. Each quality needs to be developed or tested by time in order to increase in its overall effectiveness. Teachers who can consistently employ all three qualities throughout their careers will be successful educators. It will take a lot of effort and hard work as an educator to successfully integrate the qualities of experience, creativity, and patience into their teaching styles. The effort and hard work will result in the development and establishment of those important qualities within teachers. In turn, the qualities will help those outstanding teachers to continue working hard with unquestionable effort.
Through the course load of my college career my studies also incorporated normal life span development, personality development, abnormal development, prevention, group behavior, ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Over the past 15 years I have been a trainer for professionals in areas of process management and quality regulations. In addition I have 4 years of experience at the secondary school level teaching chemistry, math and physics. In addition I taught chemistry at the local community college as an adjunct instructor. This has allowed me to explore a variety of teaching methods for a varied audience. In addition I spent two years as a tutor for high school students in the areas of math and chemistry.
I work hard at finding a way to connect with the student. This requires that I stay aware of the hints that the student is transmitting so that I can present the material in a manner that the student can proclaim "I've got it". I also work with the student to solve problems. Another approach I use is to never answer a question directly. I always ask them questions in a manner that allo ... read more
