My comments on tutoring Geography : For three summers, I taught geography to gifted middle school students for Johns Hopkins.

This is my fourth year tutoring middle and high school students in History and Government. I also have professional classroom teaching experience and volunteer elementary school teaching experience. My students, primarily Global History, World History and European History students, have raised their class grades, passed the Regents exam by many points and earned high scores on the AP. I specialize in both content acquisition and essay writing skills. Some students have worked with me for half a year or more, others for a month or two before cumulative exams.
Students being tutored one-on-one deserve lessons customized to their learning style. My sessions often incorporate some writing and topic discussion along with activities tailored to the student's interests, skill development needs and preferences.

Structured yet creative Reading Specialist.

I received my bachelor degree in elementary education. After having my two daughters, I went to graduate school and achieved a masters degree as a Reading Specialist. I was a graduate assistant and taught in a learning center for two years while earning my masters degree. Upon graduation I was an adjunct professor at C.W. Post, taught reading at a private school, a public school and then worked full time managing the reading department In an elementary school for eighteen years. During that time I had the opportunity to teach a support before school program, summer literacy as the lead teacher, creating my curriculum and a Saturday Academy in the middle school teaching study skills and test prep.
My teaching style is very structured due to my training, however, I can be extremely creative and motivating with the most challenging students!

My comments on tutoring Geography : I am very interested in teaching geography.

Friendly, non-threatening, clear and accomplishment-oriented.
Business executive looking to assist elementary and high school children with their studies. I am a voracious reader and a life-long learner. I like children, have had exposure to tutoring before, enjoyed it immensely, was very good at it (in the sense that the children enjoyed my friendly manner and enjoyed the learning experience) and would like to help children remedy deficiencies and perhaps even learn how to enjoy learning as much as I do.

I firmly believe that each child is capable of enjoying the learning process and having an intellectual life. While these two factors are essential for students to achieve high marks, our factory school system often fails to instill a love of intellectual pursuit in our children. Therefore, as a constructivist teacher, I strive to engage students where they are and create an environment where they can discover their own intellectual potential.
I graduated from Binghamton University in the fall of 2010 with a B.A. in History and a cumulative g.p.a. of 3.952. I have spent every summer since 2006 teaching Sailing, Marine Biology, Oceanography, and Environmental Conservation at the Stony Brook School to 4th – 11th graders in a variety of programs. Patience. I would have to say, I would have to learn the needs of the student, what they already know and don't know, and use what they know to help them understand what they don't know. I would be fairly straightforward I guess. Helping someone understand a certain math concept would make me feel like a better person too, because when I finally grasped something like that, I remember how good a feeling it was to do so. I feel like I can definitely make a difference.
Throughout college and high school, I have always had the ability and desire to succeed. My GPA in high school was above a 4.0 due to the extensive Advanced Placement courses. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that successful teaching begins with engaging the student. If students are given what I call a "hook" something on which to secure new information, then learning can take place. This can be simply piquing the student's interest, building on past knowledge, posing a question or mystery to be solved, or some connection to the student's experiences. I also believe that successful teaching requires a teacher to establish some relationship with the student that allows the student to feel understood and respected. I make every effort to employ methods which acknowledge the student's own learning style, and I like the students to make their own discoveries and connections to the material while providing support and encouragement.
