LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.
I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. At the college level my tutoring experience is with reading, writing, study skills and organization. Currently I develop educational programming for incarcerated youth.

A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have no formal teaching experience, I do have been developing my teaching style for many years while I worked with the developmentally disabled. I learned to identify a teachable moment, which is a time at which the student would be most receptive to learning. As a tutor, I would create those moments and boost confidence by encouraging the student to explore the subject in the way that is most interesting to them. During this past school year I was a practicum student in a second and third grade self contained 15-1 classroom. Individualization is an important part of my teaching style. I think it is important to identify what the student needs to work on and present it in a way the student can grasp the concept and enjoy learning. The student has to enjoy learning to succeed. I try to present material in such a way that the student will find it interesting and use different techniques to help them remember what they have learned. I also use the pre-teaching/re-teaching strategy. All children are capable of learning. I believe that it is a developmental process. I also believe it is a scaffolding process in which we must build upon the skills that have been taught previously. If a student missed a skill, it is difficult to build upon it. Sometimes we must go back and re-teach that skill. Unfortunately that doesn't happen enough in our education system because there is not enough time or teachers for that to happen. But, if we can find where the student missed or misunderstood a skill and help them to achieve that skill, all the other skills we build upon then will come at a much easier rate for the student!
