My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Over the past year, I used the Wilson Fundations Program with a student and it has helped them become a better reader

When I first meet my students, I want them to feel comfortable with me and what we will be doing. I try to get to know them as we work together and find out what their interests, hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, and other important factors in their lives. I will work on homework, projects, test preparation, as well as activities and lessons I have used to be successful. I want the student and parent to develop a relationship with me where we can talk openly about the work and progress!

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I have been a special education teacher for most of my teaching career specializing in dyslexia. I am a trained, certified dyslexia specialist and have been working with students with dyslexia for 8 years. I feel that the program that I use is very beneficial because it is a multisensory approach to teaching students to read. I also teach study skills so that my students become successful in school.

I have been in Education for 19 years, but have been a teacher much longer than that! I have been involved in teaching somehow since I was a young girl, working as a Sunday School teacher or as a teacher for Vacation Bible School, as a camp counselor for the YMCA Daycare program and as a tutor while in college. I have been a certified teacher for 19 years, spending most of those years in Special Education. I started my career as a substitute teacher in Northeast Ohio, moved to Texas to teach Special Education as a resource teacher, moved to teaching third grade and then back to Special Education as an Intervention Specialist working with small groups of students in all grade levels. In 2007, I became a certified Dyslexia Specialist and immediately felt I had found my niche in Education. I love working with small groups of students, really focusing on their individual needs as learne ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a 2006 honors graduate of Kent State University's Early Childhood Education, earning both an AS and BS and am currently working on a MS in Special Education. I entered the educational field as a career after finding a natural ability to meet the needs of learners with unique challenges through a mentor/tutor program at a local elementary school. Since then I have worked with students from preschool through eighth grades. I have also worked with all levels of learning ability from those with learning disabilities to those who are gifted. In addition I have worked as an aide, tutor, and classroom teacher as well as set up tutoring and enrichment programs.
I have an innate instinct to teach and a drive that brings me great satisfaction from teaching. In working with children from preschool age through high school, I have come to recognize the uniqueness of each age group but ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I pride myself on my desire to structure my lessons and my attitude in a student-centered way, and I am keenly aware that the true environment of my classroom depends on me. My philosophy of education is that the bulk of the weight rests on my shoulders; I issue the clear expectations, promote logical consequences, and then I practice what I preach. A firm subscriber to the philosophy that students must be given the opportunity to make their own decisions and that they must be able to see the logical consequence of those decisions, I operate my classroom knowing that teenagers need to feel like they have ownership of their lives. If I am organized, prepare captivating lessons, provide clear expectations, and promote logical consequences, my students will be the captains of their own ships and I will have played a role in cultivating more engaged citizens.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that children learn best from hands on experiences. It is up to me, the teacher to create these experiences, guide the child, and provide lots of postive reinforcement. There are many ways to learn and it is up to the teacher to help the student find which ways they learn best. There is also many different areas of intelligence and every person has a strength in one or more of these areas. Expectations should always be made clear, as well as an opportunity for routine, but also allowing room for flexibility. The child always comes first.
I realized my passion for teaching after working in a daycare for two years and organizing their preschool program. At, Carlow my teaching experiences were enhanced through my various field placements and student teaching. In October 2008, I began working as the third grade teaching assistant, at The Urban League of Pittsburgh Charter Sc ... read more
