During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. After a year, my classes conflicted with my tutoring schedule but I still wanted to help fellow students so I started independently tutoring. My teaching experience comes mostly as a teaching assistant during college. Most of this work was in the laboratory portion of general biology classes, with occasional hours of lecture. My duties included preparing materials and answering student questions. Later I was in charge of a laboratory section, which meant that I prepared test materials and was the sole instructor in the class. Then, I was a laboratory instructor in anatomy at a veterinary college, assisting with the instruction of veterinary students. I graduated from Illinois State University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, and a friend recommended me for an assistant job within a special education cooperative. I accepted the position and continued doing this for five years. The time I spent doing this career is what ultimately made me realize my love for teaching children. My teaching style is Socratic. I find out where the student's understanding lies, and then I lead them through the process of discovery. This is an interactive process. I do not believe that a student will stay involved if they are not actively engaged. Math is somewhat different. After breaking down the method of problem-solving used in the student's textbook, I would guide them step-by-step through the problem-solving process.
