Because I've worked with students who have various learning differences, I have a vast array of teaching strategies. What works for one child doesn't always work for another. I encourage auditory learners to always read the instructions back to me. It helps if they can explain the material as if they were teaching the subject. Visual learns tend to respond to charts, graphs, note-taking, powerpoint- anything containing shapes and color. Tactile learners have sensory needs. If at all possible, this type of learner should be given a "hands-on" task to help them assimilate the material. In my first teaching position, I worked with emotionally disturbed and learning disabled students at the elementary level in the South Bronx. This included providing individual, small group and whole class instruction to students with learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and multiple disabilities. In my second and third year teaching, I worked at The Guild for the Blind on West 65th Street in New York City. It was a not-for-profit, non-sectarian agency that served persons of all ages who were visually impaired and multidisabled to achieve lives of dignity.
