My goal is to become a teacher because I love imparting enthusiasm and knowledge to children; I want to have the opportunity to be a positive role model and influence children in a positive direction, much like the teachers I had while growing up.

As a student, I was ambitious and pursued excellence. I earned a BA in General Social Ecology, which is the study of the ways people and the environment interact. As a graduate, I had experiences and opportunities to work with people and gain an understanding in nurturing and working cooperatively with others. While working in the financial services, I took evening courses in Early Childhood Education. Three months later, I was hired as a preschool teacher for a private school in Santa Monica, California. I continued for 2 years until I moved to Boston to pursue an Ed.M in Early Childhood Education. During the last 2 years, I worked as a reading interventionist and, currently, as a first grade teacher. Having taught first grade for the last year and a half, I am skilled in teaching early reading, math, and writing.

After graduating from Haverford College with a double major in physics and astronomy, I worked for three years as an astrophysics researcher at NASA and Harvard University. In 2000, I became a teacher and a tutor. Since that time, I have taught children of all ages and adults in a wide variety of subjects. From 2002-2003, I designed and taught my own courses in physics and Calculus at the Academy at Charlemont. From 2004-2006, I completed a two year graduate program in physics education at the University of California, Berkeley. I gathered extensive experience student teaching at urban schools in the Bay Area and participated in two research groups. A Little Bit About Me...

Because I've worked with students who have various learning differences, I have a vast array of teaching strategies. What works for one child doesn't always work for another. I encourage auditory learners to always read the instructions back to me. It helps if they can explain the material as if they were teaching the subject. Visual learns tend to respond to charts, graphs, note-taking, powerpoint- anything containing shapes and color. Tactile learners have sensory needs. If at all possible, this type of learner should be given a "hands-on" task to help them assimilate the material. I believe that my patience and relaxed nature builds confidence and trust in each student. All children can be motivated to learn, because all children want to succeed in life.
As an educator, I have 10 years experience in public education for grades k-12. While my main focus has been in the field of S ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have often found that educators "believe all children can learn". Throughout my career I have put those words into practice. Since graduating from Boston College, I have worked with students who were at the highest level of the educational spectrum and those who were not given the opportunities or the attention they needed to show their true academic capabilities. I believe in understanding where students are before you decide where they need to go, and that necessitates careful listening to the student. I am patient, thoughtful, and thorough, though my best character trait is that I have a way of making students know that I believe they can succeed.
Education is very much my vocation. I began teaching and tutoring during high school, and I have worked with students in every grade from pre-school through freshman year of college. I studied history as an undergraduate because ... read more

My teaching style is unique to each student's indivdual needs. I take time to recognize my students learning style and provide the need materials or teaching style based their needs. I prefer tutoring to working in a classroom because I can give each student the specialized one-on-one time they need to help not only keep them on track with their school's requirements, but also introduce them to better study habits that could help them excel in the classroom when they do return to school.

A Little Bit About Me...

In my first teaching position, I worked with emotionally disturbed and learning disabled students at the elementary level in the South Bronx. This included providing individual, small group and whole class instruction to students with learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and multiple disabilities. In my second and third year teaching, I worked at The Guild for the Blind on West 65th Street in New York City. It was a not-for-profit, non-sectarian agency that served persons of all ages who were visually impaired and multidisabled to achieve lives of dignity. In my particular class, there were six children, three assistants, one teacher and two health aides. All of my students were multiply and developmentally disabled and I had to accommodate all their levels of needs. I am currently teaching at a private Special Education school in Newton, MA.
