I recently completed my first service year with VCU AmeriCorps, tutoring 1st and 2nd grade students at a Title 1 elementary school in an inner city setting. Many of the children had chronic behavior problems, both in the classroom and during our tutoring sessions (2 - 5 students at a time). I went into the program with no teaching/tutoring experience whatsoever--however, I quickly found that I had a special gift for working with children of all skill levels, specifically in reading/writing/spelling (areas in which we were specifically trained).
