The single most important thing about being a teacher or mentor is to be respectful, socially aware, and sensitive. Okay, that's three things, but they kind of go together. The second most important thing about being a mentor is to create understanding about the underlying principle of whatever it is he or she is learning about. Once you understand the underlying principle, the "how to" stuff becomes a *lot* easier to understand and remember. On the other hand, a person who's trying to learn the "how to" stuff without understanding the underlying principles is likely to forget key things, to be tripped up when an unexpected question arises, and to get into other trouble.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a tutor, my job is to take students from where they are to where they need to be. I can do this successfully for several reasons. First, I am patient. Often student frustration stems from classes proceeding too fast, and teachers lacking time to help slower learners. By patiently working with a student, I can teach at a pace that works best for them, overcoming much discouragement that comes from falling behind. Second, I am very flexible in my teaching methods. If a student is struggling, I am committed to trying different approaches until the student has mastered the concept. Finally, and just as importantly, I am friendly, easygoing, and have a sense of humor. Putting students at ease makes learning easier and more fun for everyone.
Having recently completed my doctoral degree, I have a good grasp of what it takes to be successful academically. My degree required extensive t ... read more

From the troubled students at an altenative school, to advanced students taking ap courses,I believe not only should there be no student left behind, as well as no student held back. I have been complimented on my teaching style, in which I listen to the students first, and then adapt my teaching strategy to their learning styles, which are as varied as the material itself. The opportunity to help a child succeed is a challenge I embrace, and look forward to every day.

I am a firm believer in student-centered lessons and learning by doing. I have always felt that kids would rather do something than watch me do something. It is of utmost importance that I always establish a good rapport with as many students as possible. I feel that my real strengths with regards to education lies in my ability to work extremely well with students in a one-on-one setting. It is no secret that each individual student has their own way of learning. I feel that I am adept at discovering their preferred way of learning and using that method most effectively in a one-on-one setting.
