When I worked as a photographer and filmmaker, I taught those subjects at many different institutions, from an after-school program for elementary school kids to NYU Graduate School. For many years now, I have worked as a science writer and editor. In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material yet to come.

I started out working as a Head Start teacher's assistant and the following year I was promoted to Head Start teacher and manager. I have also worked as a 1:1 instructional assistant with a high needs student. Currently I worked in a behavior school as an instructional assistant, and I have stepped in to plan curriculum and teach all the classes because the teacher has been on paid leave this year. I also have been commuting to college in Castleton State College from Springfield after work to complete my degree in education.
